» CHANGES TO HUNTER EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS WILL BEGIN APRIL 2016... New changes to hunter education requirements in Colorado will begin on April 6, 2016. There will be a new test-out option available for the hunter education certification requirement as well as an apprentice license for new hunters. Hunters age 50 or older or U.S. military personnel defined as active-duty, reserve-duty, veteran and National Guard can test out of the hunter education requirements by creating a customer identification number and taking a one-time, online test that must be completed in a single session with a 90 percent pass rate. Hunters age 50 and older must wait 24 hours after successfully passing to purchase a license. Military personnel must take certificate of completion and their military ID to a CPW office for verification and/or license purchase. The cost of the online test is $25. Hunters who do not score 90 percent or higher on their test must attend a hunter education class.

I'm confused....I'm 52, I have my hunter ed card, it's associated with my CID, it comes up when I buy a license online....do I need to do anything different?
I put in for my 2016 license on Feb 2nd, paid up, didn't notice anything different.

What does "test out" mean?

No,you do not need to do anything.This is for people that do not have a Hunter Ed card and don't want to enroll in a class. You can"test out" by taking the online test and if you pass by at least 90%, you don't have to take a class, but that test will cost you $25. if you fail the test, you must take the class.

I completely agree with Indian Summer here. If you are going to create an exception to the Hunter Education requirement, and allow 50+ or military to test out, AND prepare an online test, why even charge? $25 is ridiculous.

Yep,I agree ,just got an email from CPW and you can only take the test once.Failure and you go to class. Seems like age discrimination to me.

Well let's see.... If you've already hunted in CO you already went to hunter's ed. I had to go a second time when I started going to CO in the early 90's because they wouldn't accept a previous license and the records from my hunter's ed class in the 70's were no longer available because the instructor died. I have no idea where my original certificate went. I never needed it until then. The state had no records. The instructors kept them. Lesson learned. I must have 20 copies of my new hunter ed card including laminated miniature one that fits in my wallet. I also keep a spare in my fanny pack. It's hard saying how many people will take advantage of this program.
