First time considering to apply for New Mexico Elk draw....Big game regs are out and....

Can't figure out when is the Archery season only for public land and the process involved in applying for one?

Hi Kris,

Public land archery season for elk runs September 1-24. This year, however, no unit offers a hunt lasting the entire 24 days. Each unit is divided into two hunts: first hunt is Sept. 1-14, and the second is Sept. 15-24. You have to choose, but I believe you're allowed three choices.

So if you have your heart set on a unit (say Unit 16A or 16B), and prefer to hunt early season, in your application you might enter the two hunt codes for 16A, plus the early hunt in 16B, in your order of preference.

Applications are online-only, and the process opens at 8 AM on Jan 13. But you can create an account online with NMDGF before then, if you haven't already.
