Wyoming License Apps... 4 Weeks To Go

Postby Indian Summer » 01 02, 2016 •  [Post 1]

I hate pressure. lol Once the calendar flips to the new year I feel the January 31st deadline for the Cowboy State elk apps coming at me fast. One might think that I'd know exactly where I'd be standing at first light on day one.... but no. I'm in the same boat as some of you. I have great spots to hunt and I love hunting them. Nothing beats hunting elk where you know your way around really well.

But I also like trying new spots every couple years. There are always 1 or 2 spots that sit at the top of my list for awhile until I eventually commit to them. Lots of times they are places I have actually hunted once so I have hands on experience already and I know the bulls are there. I just haven't made it back. So this year I might burn the 3 points I have. I have a chance to hunt some pretty nice private and public land over near the Bighorns. I'm really excited about it. But my partners from Canada are getting back to me on it. They'll have to spend more money for the license and some other things. Plus the fact that I've never hunted it makes them nervous. It makes me nervous too! I've already Google Earthed the heck out of it and also stared at topos until I was cross eyed. It looks nice. Not the big mountains I'm used too so I'm out of my element a little bit. I'm ready to go for it though. I hope they are too. I didn't hunt Wyo last year but my clients did really well so I'm itching to get back there.

In the meantime I'm really restless because I don't know my exact hunt plans. I'm not used to that at all. Who else is still rolling around in bed at night not knowing what to apply for? What about you Elknut?

Been over 8 years sense my last time hunting the cowboy state... I am thinking about putting in this year. I am fortunate to have my dad living in the state so I can hunt the wilderness without using an outfitter.... I hope Wyoming can get their financial disorders in some kind of order here soon.

I'm rolling around in the bed right now wondering what I'm gonna do! Broke my leg in July & didn't get to hunt much at all this year.I'm not sure of where I'll be come elk season either but I've got to plan now for the hopes of being able to go. I'm not as familiar with WY as I am some other states so I may just grab a point there this year & try to hunt some easier areas I'm more familiar with. I wish everybody the best on their 2016 draws & life in general in 2016.

Joe been meaning to ask... how'd you do in Alaska?

I'm thinking about answering that on the "2015 Let's Hear Some Stories" thread.
