Second Arrow?

Situation: You've arrowed an elk and you're pretty dang sure it's a good shot (distance was 25-30 yards, pretty much broadside). The elk bolts through the brush when hit and then stops in a small opening providing you a second shot lets say, 60-70 yards away. You have practiced out to 60 yards and are pretty confident you can hit the bull with a second arrow.

1. Do you take the second follow-up shot and perhaps risk blowing him out of the country? Would you take the second shot if he was 80+ yards away?

- OR -

2. Are you gonna wait and just let the first arrow do it's job?

If I know that I made a good shot I'm shooting. Two holes are better than one no matter how bad you are at math. Plus you can't wound an elk that is already walking dead and I don't think another arrow would make him decide to sprint a mile. I would call immediately after the shot too.

I nearly always cow call after a shot on an elk. I shot one elk five times, many years ago. It just stood there, and finally fell over badly bending all five of my aluminum arrows. I also made a difficult archery shot through a Juniper tree, to get a finishing shot into a 5x5. I remember that was 1994.

I don't carry 5 arrow to bring them home, keep shooting. The more hole you have in a sprinkler the more lawn you water.
Last year we called in a satellite the 1st arrow hit him high in both lungs not a pass through the other shooter was 3" below that and a complete pass through. He ran 150 yards with very little blood to be found. 5x5 was found 250 yards away from where he was shot, he did start bleeding right before he was found.

If you knew for certain he was dying, I would draw and wait a moment. If he started to move off further, or did not buckle within a moments time I would send the second arrow.

2nd arrow on the way! I've been around too many of those "perfect" shots that turned into hours of tracking blood! Don't hesitate any longer, two holes are better than one & I don't care where the 2nd arrow hits, it just needs to draw more blood!

I would send it no question. I was given a piece of advice on my first elk hunt that I think was good. The fellow that took me was an experienced elk hunter and he told me, if you shoot one and it does not go down, you continue to shoot it until you can no longer see it. That was with a rifle but good advice none the less.

Two years ago I had this exact scenario. Buddy called a spike right to me and I shot him through the chest at 20 yards he ran and I could see my arrow stuck in the ground. He went about 40 yards and stopped behind a thicket. I watched him and he didn't lay down so I started walking toward the thicket, got about 10 yards and he sees me and turns an runs, stops at 50 yards so I let him have it again. He turned away from me and just started walking off, very hard quartered away and I shot him again at 60 yards, that one ran right down his side and cut the hide open was all. He turned an ran again off to my left and stopped broadside at 70 yards so I shot him again and he went down.

Put three of the four in his chest. I see no reason to not put another one in them if they are within a reasonable distance.

Ive been a two shot guy, rifle, shotgun, arrows. Ive put a secound shot in a lot of game where I could see the blood pumping, spurting out the sides.
My middle daughter had seen enough examples where on her first rifle antelope, I told her the shot was good. The antelope was pumping blood out the side, I only had the moment to say those words and she had the secound shot in the heart.
My youngest when she shot her moose, she saw the hole from the shot, then ran up closer and shot again

I used to work at a ford store in sales but our service department worked on big commercial vehicles all the time. This was on one of the trucks from the electric company. I thought it was applicable. I say keep shooting.
