Made my decision

Postby Jahnke76 » 08 25, 2012 •  [Post 1]

So we leave next friday for my first elk hunt. I have made up my mind that if the opportunity comes along I will try to take the first cow or legal bull that steps within range. Is that a bad idea or not. I just dont like tag soup. I know wisconsin tags taste like crap and I dont want to find out how a much more expensive tag tastes. Opinions Please?

Good call, get the first one under your belt. ANY bow kill is a trophy, I know cliche, but true. Good luck and let us know how you do.

I have always said that a trophy is in the eyes of the beholder. No one can say what they will or won't do when the moment of truth presents itself. I think your decision is a sound one and I wish you the best of luck on your hunt.

As a newer elk hunter, or time is short, or several hunters in the group all wanting to fill their tag then you bet take the 1st legal animal that offers an opportunity! Have your mind made up now as hesitation can cost you a shot & an opportunity slip away! I agree with your decision too!

Our whole hunting group are in agreement we are out to fill the freezer and will shot any elk, cow or bull.
And no body will bust my chops for what I shoot , I am very forunate for my hunt partners.
You wont be sorry when your freezer is full.

I know I will be shooting the first elk that is legal for me to shoot.I want to get my first elk under my belt.I also want meat in the freezer this year. I tired of saving rags for a casserole,I'm sure there would be lots of leftovers.

I passed on a bull last year 20 yards he only had 1 side of his rack, ended up eating the tag it was my first elk hunt. Left a bitter taste in my mouth.

I'd like to say I have a decision in mind too, but it would be a lie. I hate tag soup, but not sure I'd shoot a cow on day 1. First antlered elk will be shot. But first cow.... I'll have to wait and see how I feel when she steps out.

There is something to be said for passing on "lesser" animals the first day(s). A while back I shot a barely legal fork buck on opening morning and was left sitting around camp the rest of the hunt while everyone else hunted. Add to that the experience you will gain hunting those days.

If you do tag out early, offer to help other hunters in camp. Since this is elk you can offer to call for the hunters, even if it is with handheld squeeze cow calls.

I honestly wouldnt mind shooting a cow in the first hour of my hunt. I would gladly simply tag along and call or stay back and be the camp cook. Actually I would either get a small game license or a fishing license and enjoy the rest of the hunt. Besides Just because I fill my tag does not mean the hunt is over, I will just shoot anything else with the camera instead of my bow.

I don't think anyone will fault you for the decision you made. You did a good thing by making it before you went out. Hold true to it!

We expect pictures, even if it is a cow or small bull!

I dont have to worry aboutshooting a cow or not, have a cow B tag in my pocket along with my general tag. Come to think of it i would not even mind ending up with 2 cows.

I'll also be taking the first legal bull that comes in. I still might take a cow but I get a couple of game damage tags in the winter.

I am leaving Thursday morning from Wisconsin, heading to Colorado with two other guys. We are all novice elk hunters, and we already decided that the first leagal elk is fair game. Not only is getting that first elk important, but we nnedd experience quartering and packing an elk, and there is only one way to get that.

I know what you mean about Wisconsin tag soup, but elk tag soup tastes much better...especially when you serve it as a side dish with trout and red squirells :D

Good luck out there, and post some pics.
