1st day success

Flew into Co on Sept 7 not sure exactly where I was hunting. My buddy who lives there had a couple areas lined up but I had never been to any of them. Instead of hunting the first evening i took his truck to do a little scouting of some of these areas. I was not impressed! The next morning I went to an area that I hunted many years ago and spent about 4 hours scouting! Found very little sign so I scrapped that area as well! That evening I decided to hike into an area I had seen a few elk the year before and do a little calling. Told myself any legal elk would do as I had very little elk meat left at home.

I hiked in about 3 miles and found an area to set for the rest of the evening. I started cow calling around 5:00. Every 15 or 20 min i would do a few more calls not really expecting much. I looked at my watch at 6:56 and thought im really gonna let it rip with the cow call this time. I turned to my left because a squirell was making a racket and when I turned back i seen a bull on a full sprint coming straight at me. I was stuck sitting on my butt with my bow laying on the ground beside me. Luckily he stopped about 70 yards out and started looking around. Something caught his attention down to his right and I was able to get to my knees and get my bow ready. I quickly had my release attached and made a cow call with my voice, here he come running right at me, at a full sprint again. I had no choice but to draw as he was coming right at me and he spooked at about the 10 foot mark. I cow called again and he stopped at 16 yards to give me one last look. The arrow hit right where I wanted it to and he only went 50 yards.

I have been lucky to have access to a private ranch for many years and was able to get elk out whole so this would be my first time packing one out. Im in pretty good shape so I wasnt to worried but I totally underestimated how big elk actually are. I did get some help from 2 super awesome guys I met from California, If not for them I would have lost some meat because of the warm temps. I finally arrived back at my buddies house at 3:30 a.m totally wore out.

He wasnt a big bull but like I said earlier I was wanting some meat and he fit the bill just fine.
