Opening weekend-quiet elk success

Postby bownarrow » 09 13, 2015 •  [Post 1]

I'm behind on this report but here goes…My brother had a tag and I went with him to call & help him. Due to work and family obligations we only had Sept. 1-6. It was warm: mid 70 during the day and low 50's at night. The elk were very quiet. We put on a lot of miles, made sure to set up every time we heard an animal sound (cracking brush, etc-we were in dark timber mostly) and cold called in likely elk areas. We used a lot of techniques from the Elknut Video series, including mirroring the elk, waiting a minimum of 20 minutes after a call set, and always playing the wind. Pretty basic stuff-but effective. We covered on average 9 miles a day (GPS number), and we were in the woods before light and got out after dark. My brother killed this small 6x6 on the 5th day at 8 am. 3 trips down the mountain latter we were packed up and heading home. On a gear note I used my Stone Glacier Solo pack for the first time-it is expensive, but I liked it and would recommend it to anyone. It's a light day pack, and you can carry out heavy loads with it. I estimate the hind quarter/backstrap loads were in the 80+lb range, although I did not weigh them. Had a great time with my brother and dad, and used the Elknut playbook pretty extensively to help get our elk. I highly recommend it.
