The Elknut "Elk Noise Crew" Needs Some Help

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 08 23, 2012 •  [Post 1]

http://rockymountainathlete.com/elk-calling-contest

The Rocky Mountain Athelete elk calling contest top 20 are now posted on the link above. A couple of your fellow Elknut brothers could use your help. If you would, please do us a favor; go on the website and vote for one of us (or if we all stink badly, one of the others :)..). I know this is a shameless plug and I am sorry but sadly 50% of this contest is a popularity contest based on votes. The only good news is that we have (hopefully) some of you guys to cast a vote in our direction. I'm not sure how many entered the contest, but, myself, Conlan, and Jeremy all made he top twenty.

slim9300 (Conlan) is #5
Eltaco (Jeremy) is #11
Phantom16 (RJ) is #16.

The entry number is below the sound clip.

Thanks guys (and gals).

First Kudo to all that competed
I dont know squat about elk calling. Critic me on my critque
But I know in goose calling you show your abilities by making as many different sounds as possible showing your voice ,ability to creat different natural sounds , range, etc.
I didnt look at the names and their numbers until after listening
JMO
I placed number 2 first, that caller showed more ability to create differet sounds
16 Phanthom 2nd lots of different sounds, had what I thought the most elky sounds with excellent bugles, just not the variety
3rd place was slim,. very elky wide varity
Fire me if Im wrong and I wont cash the check

Thanks Lefty!

BTW, thank you in advance for your votes guys. I feel like I'm in American Idol with all this public voting. It's really too bad 50% of the outcome is a popularity contest. I am just happy to feel dialed in for elk season. I can't wait to get out there on the 8th and kill an elk!

Is there any vidio of the contest callers? Some of the sounds seemed to have been recorded in a better location for the recording,. It is hard to distingish someone who has a better recording location than other locations

Guys I am serious; I would like to know/learn how to properly judge. Ive listens and spoke with competitors at the SLC Internatioanl Sportsmans show . Judging semed to be more personal to what an individual judge considers good: no "story "behind the routine, Is that correct?
What should are the guidelines

The "rules" were to submit a 45 second audio clip of whatever elk noises you want to make. Some guys used a video since they must not have an audio recording device and that was simply converted to MP3 format.

As Elknut will tell you judging an elk calling contest can be impossible to describe when it comes to the criteria. Every judge sees things differently. In my opinion a judge looks for what they think is the "best" calling. In many cases this may mean what is closest to their style of calling or simply what sounds are most like what they would hear in the elk woods. I am sure there are many more "types" of judges that I am missing but I just wanted to give you an idea. I prefer the second type of judge described above by the way. :)

Woohoo! Just happy to make the top 20! Thanks for any votes you guys can give us!

Just put on 8mi and I'm back at camp. I could have done without the sheep Herder bringing 1000 sheep in here over the past week. Man, they sure covered some ground while I was at home dreaming of elk hunting...

I want to listen to all of the entries for this contest, but it'll have to wait until the 4th.

So I'm guessing that the season opens tomorrow then? Lol. I didn't even think about it. I thought you were hunting based on your post. Now I see that you are doing some last minute scouting. :)

Kill one tomorrow then!

On the WA contest... We fell short of our expectations. Let's just leave it at that. :)

I can email you the .mp4 clip and you can trim it how you like? I don't think it will be too hard. Shoot me a pm if you want. :)

Calling any last minute votes we can muster up! Unfortunately, 50% of the score in this contest have to come by soliciting our friends, so we need your help!
