Ever hear a bull roar?

Postby Lefty » 09 09, 2015 •  [Post 1]

The first time I had a mountain lion roar at me, 120 lb tom was 6-7 feet away,... quite a rush.
Saturday I had a spike roar,.. like a New Zealand Red Stag. Guys this was very load and more startling than any lion. I never knew North American elk made such a noise.
Was this just a " weird " bull?
Ever hear a bull make such a noise.

The roar was the first noise this bull made when he came in. There were at least two bulls around bugling. Even saw white tips 65 yards away in heavy cover . This spike bull never bugled. He did make a bunch of popping grunts and barks for over 12 minutes,.. Kind of exciting . As time was passing I could hear the other bulls leaving. I was tossing all sorts of garbage at him; cow calls, different bugles, popping grunts, growls even a chuckle. Sometimes just repeating what the elk just made.
Quite entertaining and maybe chased the other bulls off  But that bull kept coming back,.. He knew I was something he didnt like sitting on the trail.
However he just couldn't resist after any noise I made coming back ( 30-40 yards, and no matter what it sounded like)
So back to the roar? Any one ever hear such a thing,.. I was almost afraid to post, New to me

Oh and he was 4 miles in,..Up 660 feet and down 800,.. he was getting a pass (after my miss),.. last week

I have heard it, I had no idea what the heck it was til I seen the bull, he was a big old boy and I chased him after that, even called him the stag bull, messed up my chance with him when we were cow calling back and fourth to find each other, set my bow down walked up the hill 30 yards heard some hooves coming so I began cow calling, he came in broadside at 30 yards, and my bow was 30 yards away, talk about rookie mistake, haven't seen him since, but his "roar" was crazy to hear

Yes in the Gila 2012. I called it a growl but could be classified as a roar as loud as it was. I soon found out this was a giant herd bull that I came oh so close to killing. 1 of his 50 or so cows saved his life.

The bull I shot in 2013 roared when he died. He had run just over the hill after I shot him, so I didn't see him do it but it was really freaky sounding. Must have been his dying breath, because we found him right there.

Yes. Crazy sound.

The Bull I killed 2 years ago roared or growled while coming in to my calling. I was sitting on a high saddle above a great valley just sitting and cow calling about once an hour. It was about 11AM, and I was sure the action was done for the morning. I had just done some loud and agressive cow calling about 10 min. prior when all of a sudden this loud roar shakes me into high alert. This smaller 6x6 Bull was slowling climbing out of the valley to the saddle, and was announcing his arrival. I about freaked out! Should I call back - no - he is clearly already coming - let him come searching rather than looking where the call came from . Sure enough, he appeared on the trail out of the valley and I took him at 30 yards. That noise he made was not a bugle, but was a deep throaty growl or roar and was one of the coolest sounds I have ever heard in the wild. I hope to hear it again soon.

I've heard screams that turned into long roars at the end. But like Vids I had one roar when I killed it.

It was gun season and I spotted a herd moving away from me sidehill low on the main ridge. I knew every square inch of the area so I flew off of the finger I was on staying as high and level as I could to a saddle where the next finger over hit the ridge thinking they would roll up thrugh there and over the top out of the sun for the day. I knew where they were heading. Low and behold I got there about 3 seconds before they did. I was in a burn but it was thick with small black twigs but eventually I shot through a small hole.... and missed. Off they went. Hot on their heels pretty quick the tracks splits. Some went low and a couple stayed high. I always stay high in gun season if the wind allows so I went a little higher than the high tracks. Just before I got to the next finger I pulled up my binos and looked and there was a really nice 5 point bull standing sideways with everything but his neck and head behind a big tree. He had his neck stretched out looking waaay down over the hill.... seeing if danger was following the tracks below him. He was only about 100 yards out and I had him in the crosshairs waiting for him to inch forward a bit... or turn uphill maybe and appear on the upside of the tree. But man he just stood there like a frozen statue looking looking looking. I had never shot an animal in the neck before. But I had him at close range knew I could hit him below the spine and rock his world so I shot as far back toward the base of the neck as I could just to the right of the tree and he dropped like a rock. He didn't flop around at all but just layed there for a minute or so moving around just ittle and I could see him breathing... and then this roar that chilled me to the bone echoed through the hills and he was done. I'll never forget that.

Incidentally busting him uphill was no coincidence. About 3 weeks before that in bow season I was dogging a herbull who was heading out a finger. The same finger I had originally spotted the elk from in the gun season. I knew the trail sidehilled around the finger, so I let them walk away and started hauling butt straight up over the finger trying to get ahead of or close to them on the other side. As I got to the top of the hill this nice 5 point bull was standing there looking at me. He had been above the rest of the herd. He busted me and bolted up over the finger and spooked the rest of the herd making it a long lonely day. So on that day in gun he crossed my mind which is why I went higher than I normally would. So when I realized that the plan worked like I was on tv or something  I said to myself.. "Ha! Thought you were gonna laugh at me run and ruin my day again huh smarty pants?" Whammo!!!! I never did get a crack at the herd bull but I was pretty happy about killing that bull. He knew too much and had to die before he taught someone else that stuff!

I had one roar at me a few years back on the last day of archery in southern Colorado. With only a couple hours of daylight left, I came upon a little flat top dense with aspens and heard a light bugle on the way in. I did some light cow calling to try and bring him to me, but instead he and his harem headed down a the steep side of a fairly small draw, maybe a couple miles long. I decided to go after him and halfway down I stopped for some oxygen and had two satellite Bulls at about 40yds from me. Once they tried to bugle, I heard the herd bull let them have it. It made me jump because he wasn't bugling anymore. It was this very guttural roar, made my heart race even more. I passed on the satellites to get a chance at him, only to get to the bottom with minimal cover and about 30 minutes of legal light left in the season. He wouldn't come any closer than 75yds, so I took a shaky shot at one of his cows and missed just under her belly. I was a little sad, but that was my first time getting that close to the elk and I've been chasing since.

Best one I've heard we couldn't decide if it was a domestic bull or an elk. There were lots of cattle in the area. He cut loose a few times and my dad and I would just look at each other and raise shoulders saying, "I don't think he is, but..." We decided to hang around just to make sure, and next thing you know I have a great heavy 340 bull at thirty yards that just kept his butt facing me till he was out of range.

Yes, several occasions.
1 - Last year after a sweet cow call, one big roar at 250+ yds. Cow called again and he was at my front door in 30 seconds raking a tree and one more roar. Never saw him completely.
2 - Some years back I heard a single loud roar at 300 yds. Did a couple of cow calls and he came in within 1 minute. 70 yards broadside with kill zone covered by a tree. Nice 5 point. Didn't get him cause I was not then privy to Paul's calling techniques.
Happy hunting.
