slow down

today I got the age old lesson, taught by a decent 5x6. I quite literally got caught with my pants down. So I put in a lot of effort to get above the trees I thought to be holding game, today I was after muleys but in a unit I could take an elk as well. I figured the best way would be to enter the trees from way up above tree line and work my way back through the trees. I told myself.. take all day in there, finally have the wind to your side... move slow and let the animals either move into me or move slow enough to not spook them.
well everything is going well for about 2 hours(admitting my end of patience for still hunting) then I notice I have begun moving faster, so I figure I should sit down and eat some lunch and put down some water. after about 20 minutes I decided to continue on as I had not heard a thing except for some chatter from the local pine squirrels. about 15 yards later I realize I need to pee.. did not want to pee right on the game trail I was walking so I stepped to the side a few feet and dropped trou. No sooner am I peeing do I hear a few branches break so I shut er down and turn around to watch the golden color of a stinky bull slinking down the draw away from me. He either saw me move into position to pee or smelled me or the pee and was gone.. and I saw nothing else day, the rain finally caused me to head up and get out of the drainage.
I did meet some friendly fellas in the parking lot who graciously offered to help call in a bull for me in trade for some of my knowledge on the deer in the same drainage. Figure there is plenty of terrain to share so I am going to meet up with these guys and see what happens, lord knows they cant be any worse then me at calling elk..
so what did I learn today? slow down and pay attention.. I should have spent some time really looking around before letting the pee flow..

This same exact thing happened to me last weekend. Let my guard down, went to pee and spooked a few elk out of the trees mid stream, WTF!? Didn't see anything else the whole day. Life is cruel

at least im not alone... I was kicking myself the entire climb out of the drainage. I will say this much, he left some pools of pee as well in the bed he was laying in, one of the beds even looked like he had peed them stamped on it, looked to me like a beginning of a wallow.. way up high no where near any water. Could this mean things are starting to heat up?
