wallows

Postby powderhogg01 » 09 03, 2015 •  [Post 1]

alright guys, so I found a couple real nice wallows. one is mid mountain one is near the top of the tree line. The upper wallow is the only one that appears to be splashed and actually wallowed in, the other is just some mud that occasionally gets stomped on by a large elk(every few days there is a fresh huge track in it). I would like some ideas on how to set up on these, the upper wallow has a treestand and a game cam on it, so I dont want to sit at the wallow itself, but more somewhere the elk may pass on their way. Being so high up on the mountain I figured the elk will likely be acending the hill to get to the water, so im planning on setting up downhill of the hole and early in the morning and late afternoon once the winds settle.. I will sit at these spots from dark until I feel the wind begin to pick up then will climb up and out of the trees until the thermals take over again and I can work back down into the zone. If the wind is favorable, I was thinking I may try to still hunt from one hole to the next, hoping to catch a cruising elk in between. Can anyone tell me if this will be a decent tactic to start with, or suggest some alterations?

It sounds solid to me but I have a question for you/someone else maybe:

Is it legal to leave a tree stand up at a place overnight/extend period of time? Is there any time limit law on this stuff? The reason I ask is because I personally wouldn't hunt within a mile of that area just because it appears there's active hunters there. But if that tree stand has just been left there and they don't intend on hunting for another two weeks or it was from spring/earlier/permanent - I'd hunt it.
