is the week before thanksgiving any good for hunting in northwest mt

As a non resident my father-in-law killed most of his SE Montana elk the last week and in deep snow ( and snow machines).
One year, last days of the season their trucks got stuck, set up camp. Woke in the morning and killed 3 bulls within 300 yards of camp.
I took my wife to the location earlier this summer. We turned around on a side hill with the ATV. Her comment was "What were they thinking driving here!"
