Hi all, I'm James and I live in Southern Missouri. Finally this year me and my hunting buddies have got a chance to go Elk hunting in Southern Colorado. We've done the research and picked a unit, only problem is we never got a chance to go scout it. The summer has just flown by! So now we are having a a hard time deciding where to go in the unit. Anyone have any tips on what to look for on maps, also different kind of maps that will help? Thanks everyone! -James

Google Earth is a good start

toggle back and forth from sat and topo

Look for the secluded darker timber on sat and top with elation yo are willing to hunt

Welcome to "the" elk forum bud! Grab a log by the fire, a beverage of choice, and join in the conversations. OK, sounds like you and your wolf pack have a state to hunt and an area picked out. Jump up to the Archived Tips section and go through the threads in Planning/Scouting to start with. Also, I'd like you to do some thread searches here for Remote Scouting, you'll find some good stuff. Maps? 7.5 M topos are the maps of choice for most hunters, get them from USGS Map store http://www.usgs.gov/ and as Lefty mentioned, Google Earth is a great research source. What to look for? Benches, saddles, north facings slopes, deep draws with water, dark timber patches, meadows, etc. Good luck!

Can I ask what unit? Someone here might shed a little lite on that unit. Rifle (what season) or stick and string. The biggest thing is have fun and get into shape those little hills kicks a flat lander @$$

Unit 82 .Archery. Leaving the first weekend in September and be there for 2 weeks.

I would formulate a plan...and a backup plan...and the back up plan back up plan. Terrain, steepness, brush thickness, road access often times look good on Google earth and are very different once you get boots on the ground. Nothing to start the hunt off on a bad note than putting all your research into one particular access road to find out the forest service closed it, private land etc.
