How is the dead fall in general now, I hunted there 4 or 5 years ago and the trees were just dying off. i am considering hunting up in there again but heard it was awful with all the dead fall.

I hunted northwest of Granby, drove up 125 and then west of 125.

I've lived in and hunted this area for almost 4 years now. What you've heard is true. Lots of beetle kill, down fall, and dead trees waiting to fall. That being said, it's not a game ender IMO as I keep going back at it every year. BTW it sounds like your from KY by your name. Same here. Goodluck.

I actually split time between il. and new Mexico, my residency is Illinois though, I would think the dead trees is good for the elk in many ways. How tough is it getting around in there? I had a great hunt back in there, I may have to go it solo this year.

To me, anyplace where they has been a significant change in the local ecosystem (beetlekill, fire, clearcut, etc.) there will be elk and lots of other critters moving into these areas because of the new forage sprouting. A dead forest does not mean mean an empty forest. To most critters, a place that has had had a lot of disturbance offers new opportunities.

I agree with the elk and other critters using the area, but some places I have heard are basically complete piles of down trees and not condusive to hunting!
