Crazy Mountains Elk

Im planning on hunting the north end and north east end of the crazys HD N580 this year for archery season. I live in Billings so Im planning on doing alot of scouting the next 2 months. I was just wondering if anybody has any advice or experience in that area.

my advice is to not get lost like that guy did last sept. I haven't heard if he was ever found.....

I have checked a couple of times since I got home and there wasn't anything..... it was on the news when we got off the mtn and stopped in Bozeman for the night, on the way home....

Buddy hunted them with an outfitter a few years ago. A lot of private land and a lot of the access is through private land. Know the boundaries to the private well. I guess it is a very hard area to access.

Seems to be 3 schools of thought on his disappearance, 1 he got hypodermic, while Ive never had it, Ive heard it makes you do some really strange things, like think you are HOT, numerous people have been found stripped naked dead of hypothermia. 2, he wanted to disappear, for what ever reason, he wanted to never be found, he stashed his equipment to lighten his load and got the heck out of dodge. 3, the one I think is most plausible, his buddies did him in, if the news reports are to be believed, his buddies were in radio contact with him when he first got lost, they were packing out an elk at the time and continued with the pack out knowing he was lost? Hmmm that doesn't add up. If I hear on the radio that someone is lost in a snow storm, I dont care if its my buddy or not, I dropping what Im doing and doing whatever I can to help.

On a side note I was in the same area he disappeared in, in 2013, it rained, sleeted and snowed for 4 days straight to the point where everything I owned was wet. I made the hard decision to leave 3 days early because becoming hypodermic was becoming a real possibility. Its not something you play with.

Buy the onxmap card for montana, its well worth the 100 bucks and will keep you out of trouble. If you notice a number of trails go right through private land onto public, I talked to the game warden for that area, his words to me were, you can hike those trails, but dont get off the trail and dont hunt, if you hunt you can and will be fined.

The outfitter owns a large ranch. They hunted the ranch and also the public on the backside of the ranch. From what I understand there isn't any feasible access to the public land they were on other than across the private. They saw hundreds of elk and both he and his dad killed one.
