Looking for american big game stats..

Postby rebar » 07 10, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Hello, new here.

Which american large game has the biggest population, and where are they located?

I'm assuming elk in colorado. But I cant find harvest statistics easily comparing all the large game harvested nation wide.

Then again. I'm also interested in pound per pound of meat, not just kills.

Thanks!

Are you talking about any species? Here in NC there is an estimated 1.35 million whitetails, that's a lot of deer especially if one takes into account the total estimate for the continental US which is 30 million! So are you looking for venison in general? Or are you looking for elk? I don't know what the population of elk in CO is though.

According to this:

http://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/Huntin ... timate.pdf

The statewide estimate of elk after last years hunting season was 279,490 elk. I'm not 100% sure if that's right though?

Yes, thanks.. I think I found that elk number earlier.. But what I'm missing is all other game population and harvest stats and area's combined into one map or chart.

I guess I should have just stated earlier in my first post.. My son and I are curious where in amarica one would stand the best chance of surviving if the american dream , fell apart. SHTF . I honestly don't think or hope that would happen. But you have to admit, things that are happening lately sometimes makes you wonder.
A abundance of game (don't care if its one elk to equal wild turkeys pound per pound) would come in handy or be a down right necessity. For instance, living close to colorado units 12 and 23 in the famed Flat Tops and White River National Forest might be a great location to weather out a SHTF situation as no licenses or tags would be needed at that point .

I guess this question might have been better asked in a prepper forum. But I decided to ask Elk hunters, as I have a hunch Elks, pound per pound, out number other game in north amarica. Also considering how the game travels and how easy it is to track and harvest them..

Don't deer in the plains pretty much stay in a general vicinity? Where Elk need to travel depending on the season making them easier targets?

Thanks!

Maybe a prepper forum would suit you better, i don't know? There is a wealth of information here on elk hunting! But I don't think you realize how hard elk hunting really is? Also don't you think that if the shtf, and you kill an elk, (that's great) but how are you supposed to keep the meat from rotting? If the shtf it would have to be something serious, so where are you going to get ice for coolers, or the electricity for fridge/freezer? If things got so bad that there weren't any seasons and limits on game, and no wardens to worry about poaching, than wouldn't something really bad had to have happened? so what if the power goes out, who's going to fix it, wouldn't the power company guys be worried about their selves or family? I'm not trying to rag on you for trying to prepare for something bad that may happen, but if you are trying to think about this stuff, think it through fully. Maybe you should consider living where there are a lot of squirrels and rabbits, that way you can kill a small meal, eat it, and not worry about it going rotten?

I'm honestly not trying to be rude(reading it myself, it kinda sounds that way), but if you are trying to prepare for something, wouldn't you have rather had someone mention potential issues, that way you can figure out how to counter them? :?:

No offense taken. even though I have, I'm not a hunter. I'm not hungry

Iv asked this question in a few different forums and most of the responses have been great food for thought.

Now Iv come to the conclusion that game would probably be very scares after a shtf event. Especially if that period dragged on for years before society began to get things back under control. I imagine by the end of that time we might be hunting each other.
