Getting an elk out of a bed for a shot?

Postby Lefty » 08 16, 2012 •  [Post 1]

What would you suggest to get a bull out of a bed for a shot when hunting alone
How about a cow?
20 yard , how about 45 yards
What about those senerios with a partner?

A friend use to toss rocks, didnt always work out so well

Lefty
In 2006, last week of season, I was slipping thru the trees with an arrow knocked.
The wind was perfect.
You can see in the background the type of terrain I was in.

Thru the trees I happened to see this bull bedded at 15yds away. I drew the moment I saw him and zipped him in his bed.
As he struggled to get up, I shot him again.

ZERO blood trail... :)

I would take a shot at a bedded elk also. However I expect the elk will be bedded in sage brush and I will need them to stand for the shot.

I was just reading an article by Randy Ulmer on mule deer tips. Maybe elk are different, but he basically said to never try and get them up--wait them out and let them stand on their own. I believe he said most the time he tried to get them up, they dashed off in an instant. Again, this was for mulies so I don't know how it applies to elk.

Wait them out, they will stand & stretch or kill them where they lay if there's an opening to the vitals! Good job on a nice bull Brad!!

How long could a person expect to wait? 30 minutes, two hours, four hours??
I expect during the rut the wait time would be short. but what about the first week of September with bachlor pairs ?

Lefty
A couple years ago, my buddy and I saw 2 bulls coming thru the trees toward us about 100yds away in the timber.
It was about 10am
We werent calling, just happened to see them before they saw us.

We stopped to watch what was going to happen next.

They got about 30-40yds closer and then suddenly they bed down!
But no shooting lanes

Hmmmm...

No shot was presented so we just started watching them with our binos.
They were situated so one was facing us, one was facing away [not dumb elk :)]

We watched for about 15min and we decided to make a move.
The wind was perfect so my buddy slipped off his boots and ever so quietly started his quest.
His objective was to move 20-30 yds before they stood up.
My objective was to watch the elk so my buddy could concentrate on his footwork
and looking back at me to see what the elk were doing.

After 10 min - He made it just about 20yds when they stood up.
With not a care in the world they didnt even look our way - just walked the opposite direction

All they bedded for was ~30min

It was fun stuff!!!
