Crazy Mountains Montana 315/580

Postby DMiller6868 » 05 10, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Hey folks

I'm headed to Montana on September 17th and am looking to spend 6-7 nights in the crazy mountains. I've heard all about the access issues, private checker boarded land and no general hunting below Sweet Grass Creek in 580. I've hunted the Lewis and Clark in 454, but I've never been down to the crazies and was struggling with a few things that I was hoping someone who had some experience might be able to point me in the right direction or provide some advice. A lot of the public land seems to be more mountain goat territory than elk, from the maps, but maybe I'm missing something. I can't figure out which side to enter and where to locate the elk. There's so many ranches down low with alfalfa that it seems all the elk would be down there and not many elk would be up high during the rut.

Greatly appreciate any tips, advice or a PM.

I've scouted the south portion and we found a few elk on public land, but most were on the ranches. We lost interest in the area, but I know some people do good there on public land. Sorry, that's all the info I have!
