Score this.....5x5??

Postby ColoradoDan » 08 14, 2012 •  [Post 1]

I consider myself pretty decent at scoring your typical 6 point bulls. I have been checking my trails cams the last few weeks and I have some good 6 point bulls in the area. However, I keep wondering if I would take this 5x5 opening day if the opportunity presented itself. I am not very good at scoring 5x5 bulls so I wanted to see if this guy was worthy of a score or not. Any takers?

I don't know enough about scoring to help, but that's one incredible 5x5... those 3rds are outstanding!

I also shouldn't comment on whether or not to take him opening morning, as I've never put a bull on the ground that large... I guess it depends on the area and what you're after, but I'd have an arrow in him without a 2nd thought in my mind, personally.

If you dont mind me asking, Is this OTC?

After a quick calculation... assuming equal antlers...

322

Length main beam 50"
Length 1st point 16"
Length 2nd point 20"
length 3rd point 24"
Length of 4th point 15"
Circumference between 3 points - 6" [18"total]

Total one antler - 143" x2 = 286"
Spread credit 36"

Gross = 322

I see 260-270" gross tops.

This bull scored 300 7/8" gross. The only thing it doesn't have that the 5x5 does is thirds. Just for reference mine had 20" G4's.

The thirds on the bull in the original dwarf the 5ths on the bull in your photo. At least 24 more inches right there.

To me 4ths on your photo bull look a little longer, but the rest of the tines look shorter.

I see a 310 bull.

But if you need a score to decide if you should shoot him or not, there's no help for you.

Very interesting....thanks guys. Please keep the responses coming. My guess was just shy of 300 but again I am not a very good judge of 5x5 elk. I appreciate the help. By the way, my tag this year is for a limited draw area in CO. Took me 5 points to draw. That is why I am going to be a little more picky this year compared to normal. Just fun to think about these things before the hunt starts.

I'm thinking 300ish. My question is are you getting pics of anything bigger? If so, mabe pass, but that is a great 5x & you could easily do alot worse the longer into the season you hold out. There are units in Colo where it would be fairly easy to pass him up, but if it only took 5pp's to draw??? I say stickem!!

In my opinion, score means nothing. If you can look at him on your wall and smile, then it doesn't matter what he scored. To me, the hunt itself means more than the horns on the wall. If he makes you happy, shoot him.

I would shoot that bull. I love big racks, deer or elk or otherwise, but unique scores big points with me. I can bet there aren't very many people who have a 5x5 with 3rds like that. I would shoot that bull every day of the week. In fact, there is a jumbo 5x5 in my unit, we've seen bulls that will push the 370-380 mark, but if I get the chance at the 5 point, I'll take that shot.

Those 3rds are nice! Hard to tell the main beam though. I'd guess 300 - 310.

Yep, I'd put that 5 in the 300"-310" realm as well!

Count out the numbers guys. Firsts 10", seconds 12", thirds 20-22", etc. That bull doesn't have more than a 36-38" outside spread.

I think you might be underestimating the 1st and 2nds a fair bit.

I'm curious how long your bulls 5th and 6ths are, the 1-3rds on this bull appear to make up for any points lost by not having 6s. Just knowing what your bull scores and seeing the photos, I'd guess this 5x5 would score very similarly. Your bull has longer 4ths, but I think the 5x5 has it beat on all other tines.

Tell me how long a bulls ear is typically? I use this to project a score for tines in close proximity.

It's hard to tell from pictures just what any bull would score. But Those #3s are pretty awsome. And he better not step out in front of me. I'd give him close to 300 give or take 5.

I use the length from the base of the antler (burr) to the tip of a bull's nose as a yardstick.
This measurement is normally 15 1⁄2 inches. Look for a brow tine that extends past the nose and curls upward.
Eighteen inches is really good.

I'm with Slim on this one, I don't see this bull going anywhere over 270. Mainbeams look 40" or shorter to me, width is not all that impressive Mass isn't there, inside mainbeam spread (the only spread that counts) is 30" max. I had a buddy shoot a 290ish 5 pt a couple years back and for a 5pt to go 300" is unusual (with the exception being a bull on the downside due to age). There are a ton of nice 6x6 bulls that don't go over 300"

I'm not knocking the bull, I'd draw back on him anyday just being realistic.

No doubt photos can be deceiving! But it's a very nice 5.

Here's what I came up with?

Brow 14"

2nds 18"

3rds 20"

4th 14"

main beam 38"

circumference 28"

X2= 264" then add 38" width = 302" --rough score!
