Wyoming Elk draw general tag 1st, 2nd or 3d choice

Postby Ghost » 02 28, 2015 •  [Post 1]

I was wondering, you guys that drew a general tag, was it your 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice? And the guys that didnt, did any of you have it as your first choice?

Are you talking about the Special license or the Regular?

if Special.... All first choice applicants drew. I don't believe any 3rd choice applicants drew "in the Special drawing".

But it's a bit more complicated. It may appear that a Special applicant drew in the Special drawing. BUT.... he may not have. If unsuccessful in that drawing they put your app into the random drawing. So in essence you get a 2nd chance. Many people actually drew their license by that method. That is the only way someone who selected it as a 3rd choice would have drawn.

There are other factors that come into play too. It takes awhile to learn all of the ins and outs of the Wyoming license system.

And for the record.. there are some changes in store for next year.

Yep Special, second guessing my decision to put in for a no chance in hades tag as my first choice and then general as the second. From my research that should have been a slam dunk, but it looks like alot more people put in for the special tag with general as their first choice.

That's exactly what happened. But you could see the writing on the wall beforehand. Odds were way down last year. Lots of people didn't understand what some of us were talking about when the odds said 67% but we called it guaranteed in 2014. That's because of the other factors. But those odds showed an undeniable trend and we knew that 2nd pick was not going to be a slam dunk this year.

So... now what? What will we do in 2016 is the question. Those of us who have points certainly wont apply for the GEN license as a first choice. Burning points for that would be insane. So we may have to look at units that we know we can draw with the number of points we have if we want to guarantee a hunt. That means burning points and then entering GEN as the 1st choice from 2017 on out unless things change.

BUT... there is a saving grace. Wyo F&G loves selling us those higher priced Special licenses. So in a way they are on our side. Stay tuned........

Yea, it's a little confusing on how one should " attack" it...at least for me, it was.

So I have a question: Looking at the NR Special Draw, Total Quota was 1192.
And looking at the 100% of those who drew, had and used 1 PP...is that correct? for 2015?

Every 1st choice applicant that applied Special Gen, regardless of points drew a tag; even those with zero. 2nd choice GEN would have been 100% again this year except that an additional 300 guys applied with their 1st choice. Some guys drew Gen tags as a 2nd choice but I haven't calculated what those odds actually were. Nobody drew Special GEN as a 3rd choice in 2015.

If the WY Legislature is going to be continually bombarded with attempts to limit tags and raise fees, people are going to burn their points or otherwise do what they can to go hunting. The 2015 draw shows us that NR are more than willing to spend $1100 for an Elk tag if it appears to be a guaranteed hunt. 300 more than last year anyway. I doubt that will be lost on the decision makers of WY.

You can't look at the draw odds reports and get an accurate portrayal of the GEN portion of the ELK draw. The same is true for Doe/Fawn Deer and Antelope odds.

We drew a general full priced tag with 1.25 points. Excited does not do it justice!
