Unit 54 Drop Camp

I hope everyone had a good hunting year, at least better than mine lol...but that's another topic. I'm more of a lurker on here than a poster as there's some much good information to learn from.

Anyway, after our elk hunt this year, we've come to the conclusion that we'd prefer to go in on horseback, hopefully get beyond the majority of other hunters and try something more remote. Since we don't have the gear or animals, we've settled on a drop camp. One outfitter we're looking at has a camp high up in the Soap Basin of Unit 54 around 10,000-10,500'. This will be a first rifle season hunt. Anyone have any knowledge of this area...elk numbers, hunter density, etc. My main concern would be the elevation for the 1st rifle season. A major reason its appealing is the either sex tag we can draw.

Another area we're looking at is across the ridge in Unit 53 at the head of Cliff Creek between Beckwith Pass and Swampy Pass. This elevation is around 9,000-9,800'; however, the draw is bull only.

If anyone has any information on either, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have never hunted with eagle mt. I have hunted that area. And no people that has hunted with him. Very good drop camps that I have heard. Get in shape....
