New Bow Site

I am looking at the Trophy Ridge React 5-Pin Bowsite. Once the 20 Yards pin is sighted in it says your 30, 40, 50 yard pins are automatically adjusted and will be nuts on.

Any feedback on this bow site? Or any other I should look into purchasing. Looking to purchase one soon so i am practiced up and ready for 2015 archery elk hunt in MT.

I haven't used one but it functions on the same concept as a slider sight. They use a mathmatical formula to predict where the pin gaps would be based on two fixed distances. I'm guessing the pins would be pretty close out to 60, once you get beyond that not sure. I have a 5 pin slider and mine is off at 70-100 yards.

As arrow weight increases most bows efficiency in transferring energy into the arrow also increases. Some of the newer Bowtech's the efficiency decreases with heavier arrows. The mathematical formulas they use won't take this into consideration. They would be small differences so likely won't make a notable difference until you start getting out to longer ranges. I'd think it would work pretty well.

My only beef would be if you can't change the pin gaps on your own. Not sure how they are set up but I would want to have individual control to over ride the automatic pin gaps if I didn't like how they self set. If you are OCD about accuracy there are likely better options.

In my opinion that sight is a waste of money. Yes the pins will be on after you set your 20 and your 30. Or 20 and 40. It requires two pins to be set and then the rest of the pins will be on.

Here is why i believe them to be junk. I have a buddy who has gone through 3 of those sights because they are made with plastic or pot metal I can remember but he as busted several of the pins and also one of housings.

It's easy to say "Hey I am careful with my stuff" Sure no problem we all are but a simple slip going up and down a mountain and you pit your sight against something and now you have a busted sight out in the field. Do you really want to have this happen? I sure don't.

Some of the better sights are the ones that use steel pins and housings. I like the ones with smaller pin diameters like .19 or even the .10 I have used Axis, Truglow, CBE, Archer Xtreme, Montana Black Gold, and Trophy ridge sights over the years and my two favorite ones are Archer Xtreme and the CBE sights.

When it comes to sights everyone will have a favorite. 1 pin, 3 pin, 4 or 5 pin, even 7 pins. Things to consider when choosing a sight are things like How many pounds you're shooting, Type of hunting you are doing (Tree stand or stalking) how bright are the pin with or without a light, are sight lights allowed in your area.

The more pins you have on your sight the more your target can get lost behind those pins. The faster your bow the more your pins will be bunched together also causing you to loose your full sight picture. Having a single pin is great for tree stand hunting when you have time to adjust that pin but when stalking you can get in trouble with them IMHO. Having 4 to 5 pins is average for most guys.

I personally shoot a 5 pin sight with the pins being 20 to 60 yards. There is no need for a 10 yard pin unless you shoot a really light poundage. I also don't think that there are many places that you'll take a shot on an elk over 60 yards. Of course this is just my opinion and everyone has their own comfort level.

One way i would combat the fact that the React may break in the field is always carry my backup site. I currently have a Viper site on my bow. After hearing you talk about your friends experience I will now for sure always carry my old Viper Site in the field so if I ever to break a pin or the housing I can always just slap on my old viper site. A couple quick practice shots and would be able to continue my hunt. So thanks for the tip there.

Ill also look into the few other sites you mentioned. I may stil lend up getting the Trophy ridge React, still undecided. But either way keeping a backup site in my pack will be something i will for sure do with whatever new site i end up going with. thanks again for the feedback and insight.

I have a HHA single pin optimizer lite with a .019 pin, and I like it a lot, I would consider getting the mechanical rheostat option, because that little .019 pin is huge in direct sun. but it is another 50+ bucks, a plastic calking tube cut down works just as well I found out, but it is a bit finicky

Lots of better options in sights than the React, especially since it is priced almost as high as some of the others. If your looking for a sight that requires little work to get you close, this will do it. The math, is no big deal sight graphs have been around for years, and those can be applied for a quick sight in on any bow sight.

sighting in the individual pins is so easy, why bother with some mechanical system to do it for you?

in my opinion, some pin colors blur, move, etc depending the person's eye. my friend needs to fudge his red pin to compensate for some optical illusion that makes it appear low for him. weird.
