AZ Elk, What Unit to apply for?

Postby GoldToyBox » 12 28, 2014 •  [Post 1]

I know this is a very subjective question with lots of variables but any thoughts are welcome. I want a chance to take a nice bull, a B&C would be a dream. I've been lucky enough to take Cow & Bulls in WA, OR, MT & CO but the years are creeping up, so it's time try for something special. I know very little about the AZ Elk units. I've been on line and to a few shows looking for info but it's tough to glean info from someone selling you something. Willing to hunt Archery, but would prefer Muzzleloader or Modern Rifle.

What Arizona Elk Units would you apply for? I have the bonus points to use for almost any unit.
Willing to pay trespass fees or hire an outfitter if required but prefer to hunt on my own.

thanks for any input.

You are 3 points ahead of me, I'm applying for the early bull only hunts that begin Sept. 25, these are rifle hunts, during the rut. Residents of Az are very protective of the big bulls, they know where they are, and unless you pay the services of an outfitter, many (not all ) will not help you in anyway. Its hard to scout these hunts well, archery seasons run two weeks earlier, and hunters are in the field. Id set realistic expectations, Az has a lot of good bulls in the 340 and up range. I prefer to do my own hunting, as well, but an outfitter would be an option as well. I know this isn't a ton of help, Az tags are hard to come by.

Yep AZ tags are hard to come by ..... my last deer tag was 15 yrs ago for 12a west. I don't think have enough pts to draw the deer tag I want so I'm looking to draw an elk tag.
Obviously I would like a draw a tag to a known unit that produces decent bulls but I don't have a clue as to which units produce and have access. Read a lot on line and on the game dept site but not really getting the info I need to make a decision.
Like you I would prefer to hunt on my own but if I can't find time to scout it's a tough deal.

I know this doesn't help your question but I believe the quota for NR tags is dropping from 10% to 5% in 2016. Though I don't see the logic, many guys will be cashing in their points this year.
27 and 9 always seem to rise towards the top. If you are going guided I would contact them.
