To the best of my recollection 40ish for me! Last year was the 1st time I ever used a rangefinder so I'm guessing here!

59 yards on elk, 2 years ago I was headed to a ground blind I built near a water hole. As I approached, I saw movement 20 yds below it. It was a nice 6x6 raking a small aspen tree. It was one of 3 bulls I had seen near there the night befor. There was no way I could get closer and still have a clear shot. I ranged him at 59 yards. I had been practicing up to 60 yds in camp all week. I drew and settled just behind the shoulder, and just as I released he lundged forward and I knew it was going to be to far back. Just befor the arrow hit, he backed up and my arrow struck both lungs. He took off, I cow called immidiately 4 or 5 times and waited. A moment later he appeared a little further to the right headed in my direction. He took about 6 more steps towards me, dropped his head and fell over at 45yds. He never knew what hit him. I always let out a few cow calls after the shot and has paid off several times. His right horn was growing out of his forehead and skull was deformed. You can see the fresh aspen bark on the base of the right horn where he was rubbing the tree.

I know its not ethical, and would not recomend it, but when I was a lot younger, in the late 70's and 80's. I hunted Catalina Island for spanish goats and Santa Cruz Island for Moreno Sheep. Very open steep ridges and cliffs. I shot bowhunter style with no sights or releases back then with a compound bow. I shot several goats and sheep at over 100 yds. One we stepped off at 120 yards on a nice curl and a 1/2 ram that made the Calif. Big game record books. We did not have range finders back then. I would never take that shot today, even with the faster bows and lighter arrows. My maximum shot on any animal would be 70 yds. today. Hunting in the west usually calls for a longer shots due to open terrain and thats how I was raised unlike the more common shorter tree stand shooting in the east.

I guess I could clarify one of my elk kills...

I shot a cow at 30yds. She took off and I quickly cow called after the shot.
She ran and for a bit then turned back the way she had come.
I called again and she stopped with her head down - I ranged her at 52 yds and sent another arrow into her...

She didnt travel very far after that

So did I shoot her at 30yds? Or 52? :)

Since you gave no conditions;

746 yards. A coyote, with my trusty ol' .270 and a 3-9 scope. I didn't have a rangefinder until the next day, so I just had to take a shot and adjust accordingly. It was in a corn stubble field, so I couldn't see any dust until the 6th shot, and I corrected and whacked him with the next shot. I even had two spotters and they couldn't see the dust either.

Archery, 75 yards. Jackrabbit, hit him in the scapula, still got a pass through with a judo tip on.

I have yet to kill an elk with my bow, but with any luck, I shall answer this question in a few weeks.

Well I did assume a couple things.... but that is not always a good thing...

1 - This is the Nothing but Elk Hunting Thread..
2 - Most on here are archery hunters...

You did some nice long range shooting tho... :)

About 35 yards on a pronghorn. Most of my kills, even western species, have been inside 25. Getting close is important to me.

Well, I'm glad you didn't specify, because I couldn't play otherwise. Hopefully this year it will change.

27 yards is the furthest i've had to shoot most are withing 20 yards. I did miss a huge 6x6 at 11 yards :( 10 years ago that shot still haunts me.

My first archery bull was at 50 yds.Less than perfect shot as he had winded me at 20 yds & ran, but could'nt resist a second look when I cow called to him. He was wired, broadside & looking right at me when I cut the shot, but whirled to run & as luck would have it the arrow hit him in the neck & cut the jugler. Real lucky it turned out so good. I did cleanly take 4 nice mulies on consecutive years at 60 that were completly unaware of my presence.Bad eyes & a trick shoulder have pretty much stopped the long distance shooting these days.Besides, I want them pizzin & blowing snot on me.WAY bigger adrenalin rush!!!
