Private land vs public land

New to the forum and excited for the upcoming season. This year will be my 2nd elk hunt in Colorado. I pulled a tag in unit 43. I will be backpacking in. I have been looking at Google earth a ton and doing some scouting. The area I plan to hunt is in the Maroon Belles Wilderness area. I did stumble upon a house quite a ways from where I plan to hunt but was curious how to know when land turns from public to private. In Colorado no signs need to be posted about private land. Can anyone shed light on this? Thanks for taking the time to consider my post.

I use a program from hunting gps maps that tells me public vs private. They sell computer programs or handheld gps chips for each state. If your a RMEF member you can get a free code from RMEF and get a free Phone app and free maps for 1 year from hunting gps maps . There maybe a free program out there but I don't know what it is.

Most of the private land in 43 is in the valleys. There are some inholdings in the National Forest, but most are marked or are very small mining claims. If you go past Wilderness Area signs I don't think you have anything to worry about. I have hunted there often and never had any issues. Be ready for very steep and very high altitude.

Are you sure it's a house? If you're certain it's in the wilderness area then it's likely a forest service cabin or hut. Either way, use CPW hunting atlas (or one of the apps mentioned here for in the field) and you can identify public/private land.

HuntX makes chips for your GPS that show all land boundries public and private, they also have an Iphone app

A private cabin can be on a very long term lease on National Forest
