Trail cam ethics

What should they be/are?
I got a lot of pics of people who didnt know their picture was being take, but more that deleted their pics
I pulled up to a waterhole Tuesday evening with three trail cams. Im guessing they are the all from the same owner/s
The fellow had a wonderful, well overbuilt heavy steel channel thick-enough-to-de-rail-a-train boxes to prevent getting into the camera.
I also understand the owners frustration. I believe I came across one of his vandalized Trail cams last year.
I was frustrated last year too.The huge influx of new hunters in the area My pics were often deleted during the week.

Ive had I guessing it was a CO place a hat over our camera on a bear hunt . I'm OK with that.
I don't like to have 100's pictures or video of me out there when I'm looking at public places, Kind of creeps me out.

The three cameras Tuesday were set in such a way I'm on some pics, I'm OK with them knowing I'm in the area, just not a bunch of pictures of me kicking around. Even If I had access Im not going to mess with someones camera even deleting just pics of me from the SD card.

What are the ethic of placing trail cams
Whats completely appropriate if your pic is being taken?

I have never had a reason to mess with someone's trail camera. They are private property. On the other hand, if I was in a very embarrassing position, or had been in one, and I knew I could be seeing myself on Youtube, I would probably feel differently.

i think swede is way off the mark. if you realize youre on a trail camera, the proper thing to do is immediately put yourself in an embarrassing position. think full frontal, swinging parts. that being said, people need to learn to set their cams in such a way that others wont see them. it would prevent a lot of problems.

I just set 6 trail cameras and plan on setting a few more in a week or so. Every one of my cameras has gps tracker in it so I don't lock them up. I simple get them back. For some reason no one steels my cameras. I write it on my cameras. So unless you want to go to jail for theft I suggest you leave mine alone. That being said. I welcome the photo bombs and I actually enjoy seeing others act as dumb as I do in the woods.. Face paint on the lense is pretty messed up though.

In 5 years of setting up my game cams I have never got a picture of any human except me. Guess I'm pretty lucky ! If I did get people pics I'd be looking for a new hunting area

Evidently Rancher complaints, the local paper, Fish and game and a number of online forums talked about the area, mostly bragging about the success rate and big bulls.
Three years back I was the only hunter who reported killing a cow, What they didnt say at that time the average hunter hunted the unit 11 days. Over 5 years the few hunters I spoke with most were exceptional archery hunters,, You know the 10% who catch 90% of the fish
And I did move an hour further

I say lave the Camera alone if it is in a remote area no exceptions..

I have 9 cameras out right now. I have pics of people occasionally on the cams. Usually right before the season opens. I have had my picture taken as well. It doesn't bother me. I don't mess with them when I see them and hope others will not mess with mine. Mine are in lock boxes that would be pretty hard to steal, but they could bash in the lens, cover them up, or whatever. Just a chance a guy takes when placing personal gear on public property. Sort of like leaving a $100 bill on the sidewalk, you would hope no one takes it but that's a chance you take.

One time however I was very tempted, I was spring bear hunting. Just got done with a long calling sequence. Motioned to my dad that I was going to go up the ridge for a minute to release last night's dinner. Upon finishing, I turned around to cover things up, and much to my surprise I was starring face first into a trail camera. I went back down the hill pretty embarrassed. I had a camera in my pocket that would have easily allowed me to erase the pics just left on the trail camera. But I decided not to, like I said, I don't want to mess with others stuff as I would not want them to mess with mine. I do live in fear though as it obviously got pics of both my top and "bottom" I hope those pics never show up on a hunting forum!

I've only come across one trail cam....that I know of and it was this spring while bear hunting. Was actually shed hunting very low on the mountain with my buddy and just about ran right into the barrel. Looked around, saw the camera, gave it a thumbs up and a wave, and moved on. It's way easier to do that than to steal a camera and live with the guilt in my opinion.

a trail cam can do no harm as it only records true events. Others view those events. They are no different than the local city using them to take your car plate picture when speeding. It is a stretch to derive an ethics case for or not for their use. I wonder how one state entity says it is OK to use them for a public purpose and then on the other hand say it is not OK to use it for another purpose.

Each of us will have to stand and give account of everything we ever did anyway one day. If being caught on a trail cam is bothersome now........what will you say later?

It just seems a bit weird having 400 pics of me kicking around; I was looking for a business card to place and ask then to call me, then a photo of a subscription label from Eastman Bow hunting Journal
