X3, last two weeks hands down, why, because I want the bigger bulls cowed up, they are much more vulnerable at this time, they are willing to defend their cows at just about any cost! They are more vocal themselves as well as receptive to calling giving away their location. This is the time we live for! (grin)

Another vote here for the last few weeks of SEPT. I've hunted earlier in the month many times but oftentimes, have been met with hush puppy elk... It's all about hunting "vocal" elk for me which seems to be during the latter part of the rut.

The Middle Fork and Selway zones have rifle seasons the last 2 weeks of September. It's very remote backcountry though, so you'd probably need horses. I would love to hunt that someday.

A real two weeks.
I would head for a pack trip 20,20 A 26 or 27.Set up a big tent
I want a back country hunt, I dont care how many wolves or few of elk , just get back , hunt as hard as I want, sleep when I want, even fish if I want the last two weeks

I usually head out about mid-September, but the pre-rut thread got me thinking.

Last two weeks in sept also. To find a herd bull with a cow in heat seems to be the pinacle of exitement, fustration, and anger.
The satalites can smell the cow in heat, and are venting their fustration, the herd bull is having a hard time keeping the satalites at check, especially if there is more than one, and is venting his anger, and warnings verbally.Great time to be an elk hunter!

First two weeks because I have zero patience. I would want to take a swing at them ASAP.

I like anything from about the tenth on give or take a day. Still catch the tail end of the prerut and hopefully a big one or two not cowed up, but still talking good to great on any day.
