Track Differences

Postby Harmy » 07 29, 2012 •  [Post 1]

Yesterday I was out and found a great wallow. It was loaded with tracks and was super fresh with all kinds of mud and new tracks where I could see fresh and wet mud in the trail leading away from the site. I was super psyched until I had to run away...

So, just what are the differences between a large elk track and a moose?
I really can't tell the difference.

Moose tracks are more pointed in the front than elk tracks.

I don't think elk tracks get in the range of moose tracks. Moose tracks are ridiculously large. I used to encounter a lot of moose in my elk and deer hunting areas in Idaho, and there is just no comparison. When it's 5 or 6", it's a moose.

Mud will make stuff look bigger, in my experience. If that is the case, I'd try to backtrack out of deep mud and look at tracks in other substrate.

Size
The back of the moose is more squared and wider in the back,.. not like moo cows but wider , elk tracks looks more refined
