Late season tactics

Postby Anaconda » 07 28, 2012 •  [Post 1]

I've drawn a pretty good November tag.

Now everybody loves a September elk hunt, but the fact is more people take to the field in late October and November then during the rut.

How does one find and tag the big bulls in the general hunt ?
Are there any calling techniques, any secrets ?

So far, my game plan boils down to;
Get away from the roads, focus on rugged canyons and cover lots of ground with boots and binoculars.
Besides a few days of scouting before the hunt, what else can I do to increase my odds of coming home with a mature bull ?

Your game plan is good with lots of glassing, calling would be low on the list although there are some very good LE Units where bulls are still talking in Nov!!! What state is your hunt & how many tags were there issued?

Arizona, 300 tags

Snow is a possibility, but I don't expect much. The unit is mostly flat, with some deep desert canyons. Combination of PJ flats and alpine forests. I plan on hunting mostly the PJ flats and canyons.
