Off to the Mountains

Up at 03:30 to head up to the mountains for a Bonzai scouting trip. Going to set up a quick shooting range (Gongs and Bench) and set up a few trail cameras at wallows.

Sounds great. I too am looking forward to going. I have been coordinating with my son and brother, and hope to be out for about 10 days starting mid July. For a scouting trip, that sounds like a long time, but I think I can suffer through it.

Well, ran into a road block (literally) on the mountain road, so we got held up about 45 minutes this morning on the way in. There was a logging truck that lost a few logs (chains and side rails broke) and they were playing pickup sticks when we got there. So, we were going to get there right around 7:30, ended up not getting to a good vantage point until 8:15. Saw a few bucks (2 1/2 YO Muleys). One had double eye-guards on both sides, one of which was pointing back almost as far as his ear. They aren't going to be very big bucks this year, but that one was cool. Didn't see any elk, I don't expect to see them in this area for another few weeks. For some reason they don't start to filter into that area until later in the summer. Shooting range setup was good, we set up gongs at 225, 550, 800 and 1,000. By the time we got set up and started shooting the wind had picked up so we only shot out to 800. I shot my rifle at 225 (hits) and 550 (NO hits). I shot my friend's 6.5x.284 Norma at 550 and 800 (hits).

I just got into shooting long range last year, it is so much fun! I practiced quite a bit out to 1,000 yards, and felt I was effective out to 800 with light winds. I ended up taking a buck at 610 yards from atop a rock bluff with a 5 mph crosswind. 1 shot right in the 10-ring! Not a big buck, but it was the experience I was looking for

Tyler, bummer on the start of the scouting trip, but it looks like you salvaged it pretty nicely! (grin)

swede, man I'm jealous dude, 10 days is a sweet amount of scouting time! Are you looking at any new areas?

Elk.addict, man that's a pretty nice buck, you sure have high standards! (grin) I'd take him in a heart beat! (grin) Congrats!
