Where do you lack in the Elkwoods?

Other than what I posted on your other thread, it is tough to say. More good bulls in the area I hunt would sure be helpful. I guess if I really thought that I had some significant weakness I could educate or practice my way out of, it would not be a weakness for long. I suppose some might say being age 67 next season presents it's own limitations, but I don't see it that way.

Glad you mentioned this. I can hear some bugles, but not all the ones my partner hears, and when I do hear them I can't tell what direction they are coming from. Makes it very interesting when hunting solo.

my 600' above sea level lungs dont seem to like elk country at all.

no matter how hard I train every year, I still suffer "elk-lung".

that, and having very limited pre-season scouting opportunity....I usually get to do a little scouting, on family summer trips to the area, but its not much, and its NEVER enough.

Lack of experience and knowledge. Shot my first elk last fall and got bit with the bug, now reading and watching every thing I possibly can for this season

I'm making progress but I believe one can never understand elk and their habits enough ( unless your Paul). Working on this.

I think the biggest weakness I have had is "reading the situation". I'm getting better at it with each year. I've done a lot of things right only to fall apart in the end because I misread the encounter.

What I lack is just general experence elk hunting (and knowledge about elk lol). no matter how much you read, study maps, or study the animal via books, video, or internet there is nothing that can compre with being in the woods. every experence is different and you learn from being in them, but like Toby said, that is tough to do from across the country.

Pinpointing a bulls location. We all love to get in the zone before calling, I really have a tough time on bulls that only give you a bugle or two trying to get into that 150-200 yard zone before calling.

Yeah, I'll go with that (besides my crappy distance vision).

Got burned because of this on Sunday AM...had birds gobbling in the timber, just after flydown across a clearcut. Made the decision to go to them. Busted two (silent) gobblers that were on the way to my setup! If I would have just stayed put a couple more minutes...

I am going with this as well......sad but so true for me.
The most I have been rewarded with (as far as harvesting goes) while bow hunting is minding the wind and sitting back and enjoying whats in front of me. Forget about the hunt and enjoy the moment. You pick up on more subtleties this way.
