The Six "P"s As They Pertain To Elk Hunting

In the Army we used to say "Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance". What did you not do so well prior to last year's elk season that you'll do better before you step into the elk woods this fall? Improper conditioning? Not practicing your elk sounds/calling enough (shameless plug for the post up your elk sounds threads)? Forgot some key pieces of gear, or, realized some of your gear wasn't adequate? Didn't ensure the home front was squared away before you left? Chose a poor hunting partner? Chose a poor time to plan your vacation in relation to the rut? Let's hear them so perhaps, we can help each other out and make for some better planned and executed hunts this September.

For me, nearly everything was well-planned and excecuted. We had enough food and gear to survive a nuclear holocaust. Except for 2 very important pieces of equipment that I ALWAYS bring with me, but somehow neglected to bring this time. My friggin' tri-hone wet stone and meat pack. You can't really stuff a bone-in, hide covered rear quarter into a day pack. Don't ever forget either one of those items . . . you will be hating life. At least we didn't forget the wet wipes.
