another calling question

ok guys im obsessed with the lip bawl bugle. ive been thinking of different ways to implement it more of my calling methods. I know this call is mainly a bull calling to his cows and from what ive been told sometimes bulls will lip bawl at each other when in fights over breeding rights ( longer and more drawn out).

i use this bugle in my breeding sequence, cold calling setup.

BUT what if you where to use it more as a location type bugle. especially during mid day calling while moving into areas that you know hold elk. heres whats going through my tiny brain right now. you move from location to location and you get to close proximity to a bedded herd and the herd bull hears another bull (you) lip bawl at his cows. im sure he will fire back with a warning and grunts saying back off buddy. so you start racking, huffing, and throw out another lip bawl bugle, calling his cows to you and telling him to get bent.

no i don't plan on running around throwing out lip bawls everywhere but is there room to put more of the calls we know into our regular calling sequences and make sounds most hunters don't use?

I tend to use the sounds I know I can produce well. For the moment the lip bawl is out for me. When the day comes that I can produce a great lip bawl at the drop of a dime I won't hesitate to use it. Right now I'm too in inconsistent with that sound and it's hit n miss. So I'll concentrate on keeping it simple and sticking to the basics. Seems to be working.

Jeremy, you paint a nice picture in your minds eye! (grin) The thing as with any elk sound is when & where to use it! Lip Bawls used by bulls is "time specific" --- Bulls don't dilly dally along tossing Lip Bawls out for no purpose. It's generally in use to control their group no matter how big or small. They can use it to call other cows their way once heard or smelled. When used towards cows or inviting them it's in a short manner, not long & drawn out.

As for your intended use I pretty much limit it to breeding sequences for the very reasons Trophyhill mentions. Personally we don't use it often but do not feel it does anymore than a Location, Advertising or Challenge Bugle once close enough to other elk to gain a response & working elk from there! -- If you want to add another yet different sound for location purposes try the Estrus Buzz in a controlled but loud erratic version sorta like you're trying to "shock bugle" a bull. This can be very effective for location purposes. Remember most bugling or location sounds are for finding elk not trying to call them to you initially!
