Elk license apps questions

Postby Triplebhunters » 03 06, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Any questions on filling out your applications just ask.

I just recieved two emails in the last ten minutes with Colorado having license application 101 class. So I thought let's dedicate a thread just to app questions. Any State, I wouldn't be able to help with other states which I do believe have already had their deadlines.

My assumption is an applicant chose unit without knowing what was available.
I've looked through some tables and seen over 1000 applicants for 200 tags and still seen where 600+ applicants chose said unit for second choice. It's not going to happen. Applying for these license can be a major chore for some escpeciallly if looking at more than one state. Colorado has classes all over the state, just for applying for a license. Maybe thats due to the legalization of mountain grass.

I'm assuming you guys are looking at the NR Regular Random Draw odds?
It's due to a lack of number of tags available for that unit. Using Area 31 as an example, in 2014 only a total of 4 Non-Resident Type 1 (Any Elk) tags were available for this area.
- According to Wyoming laws 40% of those tags go into the "Special" draw (those who are willing to pay the higher price for the tags). In this case, 2 tags went to the Special Draw, leaving 2 for the Regular Non-Resident Preference Point and Random draws.
- Again, law requires 25% of the remaining tags go to the random draw. (In this case: 2 tags x 25% = 0 tags available to the random draw). So, the two remaining tags were taken up in the Preference Point draw. You had to have 8 preference points minimum required to draw. So on the NR Regular Random draw odds you see 0 tags available and some 445 people who applied for them.

The reason guys do this is they apply and try to get drawn with their 2nd choice area as you only use/burn your preference points when you draw your FIRST choice. Using the example above, say you have 5 preference points. You apply for a Area 31 Type 1 tag for your first choice and apply for Area 7 Type 4 (antlerless) for your second choice area. You have no chance of drawing your first choice area, but a very good chance (50 out of 56) drawing your second choice area and you still retain your 5 preference points.

Exactly. I apply for an impossible area as my first choice to make sure I don't get drawn. That way I keep my points because you only lose them if you get your first choice... and I draw my second choice. Once I have enough points I'll put a legit option down as my first pick.

While we're on the subject of licenses keep in mind you can buy a Montana elk tag all year. If anyone doesn't have a plan or needs more time to figure things out you can fall back on Montana all summer. Don't just sit there and wait to die.... go elk hunting!!!

So we can assume Wy does not have an option to apply for point as first choice just in the July to September period?

During the applications dates (Jan 1 - Jan 31), I think you have to apply for a full price license and you have the option to apply for a preference point as well. If you draw, I believe you will be refunded the money for the preference point. If you don't draw, you'll be refunded the license fee and will be awarded a preference point.

If you don't want to apply for the full price license in January, you have the option of purchasing just the preference point from July 1 - Sept 30.

Yeah Dave... no choices in the July/September points only period. You just log on and buy the point.

The other question that often comes up is can I get a point in January for not drawing and also buy one come July and the answer is no. 1 point per year. It costs quite a bit of money but I love getting the General license and also gaining a point in the same year. I'll be ready to do the tag justice when I get 7 points or so and cash them in.

Think I should have worded this different. Wy does not have an option to apply for a preference point during the January drawing, only during the July through Sept Point only process can one apply for a point?

Ex. 1st choice= Point
2nd choice= unit 36
Etc
Etc
This is how it is done where I go now, the way I am understanding Wy for one to acquire a point during January draw is to apply for a premier unit then draw for a general tag as second choice.

Ex. 1st choice=unit 36
2nd choice=general tag

I don't think you can select "point" for your first choice.

Page 12 of the pdf link in the earlier post: "For nonresident full price elk, deer and antelope, preference points can be accumulated either by submitting the applicable fee when applying for the initial limited quota drawing for licenses or by purchasing a preference point after all drawings for the year have been completed, beginning July 1."

Further along on page 13: "If you select the preference point fee option when submitting your nonresident application for the limited quota drawing, the fee you must remit is as follows:
Regular
$641 - Broken down into $14 Application fee, $577 License fee, and $50 preference point fee.
Special
$1,071 - Broken down into $14 Application fee, $1,077 License fee, and $50 preference point fee.

FYI -- I wouldn't count on drawing a general tag as a second choice. Not using preference points (random draw only), in the regular draw there were 579 tags available and 2950 people applied for those tags - which means none were left over for the 2nd choice selections. In the special draw there were 386 tags available and 391 people applied, again leaving none to the 2nd choice selections.

Hope this helps...

Sure does, thanks. This year I'm going to purchase a point and wanting to take a day or two to spend in wy looking around. Just difficult finding time to add a new state while planning current area.

I guess that gets back to what we were talking about. To apply for a license AND get a point you need to pick an impossible draw to enter for your first choice.

I'm always nervous I'll draw the darn thing so I make sure I pick somewhere that I'd actually like to hunt. If I drew it would be research gone mad but that's fine. Odds have been dropping in Wyoming. You'll be lucky to draw it in the Regular drawing as a 1st choice with just 1 point. I don't think you can get it as a 2nd choice. The only way to draw that tag as a 2nd choice is in the Special drawing.... cha ching! $1171 plus the $50 for the point.
