Montana newbie

Hey all, looking for a spot to start hunting elk in Montana this year. Not a specific drainage, just a general area. Going it alone, most likely.
Have an opportunity at the "Bob" on horseback, but it would be during early rifle and I want to do archery. Not sure how much pressure it gets at that time.
Also, anyones thoughts on the best time of season, if it makes a difference.
Thinking maybe Helena NF, Dillon area or the Swan. Possibly the Bitterroot. Any of these places with less wolves?
Any pointers in the right direction is greatly appreciated!

I'd pass on the Bob. Yes it's a beautiful place. The elk population is just terrible up there these days. Not sure if it makes any difference to you but it's also serious griz country.

The Helena area is home to the famed 380 unit. You will NOT draw that permit unless you've figured out how to hit the Powerball at will.

Elknut would agree that wolves aren't that big of a deal. Maybe if they were really left unchecked like in and around Yellowstone and Glacier.

Dillon has some decent elk hunting if you know a specific spot. There is a lot of pressure in that area so you'll need some inside tips to know where to go to have some where to call your own, or at least share with a limited number of others.

Don't know anything about the Swan area.
