Believe I did a similar thread a while back but can't remember. Old Timer's disease I guess. What are your favorite books on elk that you are constantly reading and re-reading. I have three. Elknut's playbook, J. Erickson's (Swede) Tree Stand Hunting Rocky Mountain Elk, and Elk of North America. I latch on to various magazines once in a while but they seem to fade after a while. What about you cats? What books, specifically on elk, do you keep around?

and then there is another I look at yearly that is not so much elk but very useful for me to get an elk.. A Bowhunters Guide to Accurate Shooting; the Complete Bowhunter, by Lon Laubach.

another one for anyone interested by Dwight Schuh, Hunting Open Country Mule Deer contains some really useful stuff.

I believe this is the one that was brought up before? I need to get my hands on it for some reading material . I'm currently going through the playbook again and finished up swedes book. Had a good time readying that one (twice) and pestering him with questions. He was very helpful and I appreciated his responses.
I also have a couple magazines that I look forward to and hope there is one article that catches me. I like jaquamo - Spelling? - article in the last extreme elk. I like reading peoples outlook on the hunt and style more so than describing the hunt itself. How does one come to the point where they understand how and why they hunt like they do. I have been trying to answer that question for myself lately and don't have an answer.

Another one is Elk Country by Valerius Giest. This one is also good for those who just look at pictures more than read.

While we are on the subject, I have been wanting to ask this: are ElkNut's and Swede's books catered just towards the bowhunter, or will guys who hunt rifle seasons get something out of them as well? I keep debating on picking them up, but I wasn't sure if it was relevant to us.

All three of Jay Houston's books are in my library, all very good reads.

cohunter14: The Tree stand hunting book I wrote is geared toward bow hunters. If you hunt from a tree stand it would apply. There are some principles of finding, selecting and managing a tree stand that are universal. I would really have to know more about your hunting to say for sure, but I doubt you need a tree stand or a book. Why don't you tell a bow hunter friend about the book, then borrow it? That way you will know for sure.

Ditto. I love Petersen's books. Sometimes it's refreshing to take a break from the "how to" and remind yourself of the "why."

The playbook I find myself constantly reading, alone with listening to the cd. Trying to understand what the different sounds mean. A lot of information to grasp and learn to use it in the field. The knowledge of the play book is like taking a 400 class in college. Good stuff! Thanks Paul

Bugling For Elk by Dwight Schuh.

This was my first book a long time ago that got me started elk hunting.

The Playbook by Paul is my go to now.

I need to get my hands on that Tree stand book

Playbook field book and audio version, Paul now reads me my bedtime stories and talks to me to and fro work.

Elk Hunting in the Northern Rockies by Ed Wolff is another very good one from the '80s. Same vintage as Dwight's Bugling for Elk, and still available on Amazon. I read, reread and re-reread both those great books.
