Colorado Roads

With all of the flooding that Colorado had last fall, did any of the mountain roads wash out? Will it affect your ability to get into your hunting area? Who do you contact to find out if your roads are in tact and open when planning your hunt?

ct I didn't have a problem getting around on the mountains I hunted an I drove a lot of mnt roads cause I love looking at the view.

Most of the roads that washed out were in burn areas.
Other FS roads were mostly muddy and tore up with vehicle traffic from archery season on thru the rifle seasons.
The FS typically runs a grader throughout the summer/fall on the most traveled roads

I think there might be some roads near the Boulder area that are shut down. That was where most of the flooding occurred and they shut some of those units down for archery season. They reopened the units for rifle. I'd call the NF district you are interested in and ask them about a specific road.

Yeah, the FS or local DOW office should know. I know of a road in the Pikes Peak area that got washed out and is still closed. I have also heard of some in the Boulder area as well. That flood affected a lot of areas, so as has been said, if you have any questions it is best to call and find out.

we are looking to go to Colorado this year elk hunting. This is our first trip out and a buddy from the group sent me a video on you tube of a group that needed to chain up last year. Are you guys bringing chains for the truck tires. The trucks on this video looked to have some girly tires. we plan on having some pretty aggressive tires. just wondering if we should pack these along as well. Thanks guys

What season? Archery I didn't need them. First and second season rifle we definitely needed them after the roads thawed.

I always have chains in my truck
A set on the front will get you in/out
But I have never used them during archery season

I've been in places where chains were needed in September for a couple days because of snow, then mud. If you aren't in a rush to get out, generally not needed.

As has been said, a lot depends on the season you are going up as well as the roads in that area. Certain areas I have hunted you would never really need chains, whereas other areas it helps to chain up once there is any measurable amount of precip in the area. Best bet is to probably have them. What kind of 'aggressive' tires are you planning on having? Keep in mind that some of the aggressive tires out there are designed more for mud, but unfortunately those are terrible in the snow.

we are planning on going 2nd season. we are looking around the Gunnison area. thank you for the advice we are also have a winch for the front but if we get into a an area with out trees we would be in deep thank you guys
