Ahhh.. No rest for the weary friends. Elking season is too close. Here we go with bugles with grunts. Bugles can range from a few pretty notes starting low to high or high to low, growls, moans, and whatever the big boy is feeling at the time.. The grunts are "hard" hitting and aggressive.. Spaced a bit apart. He's warning you to stay the hell away or else. Goal is to try "sucking" in air between each grunt to add realism to your sounds.. Isn't this fun :D. Let's hear your offerings. That's right, we at Elknut forum are like bugling drill sergeants.....no rest until you're all rocking your calls. Everyone is doing so well... Keep it up.. RJ

My favorite of all calls! There is nothing like trying (and epically failing) to sound meaner and nastier than a true mature bull at close range. It's an experience that can make you weak in the knees and giddy with excitement at the same time. :)

First, here is a challenge oriented scream with grunts (not to be confused with a cow gathering scream). Basically telling a bull to get the heck away or you will open up a can of you know what. :) This is my favorite call to use in tight after going through a couple steps of the threat and the bull starts to get angry about another "bull" coming from nowhere.

Here is a more typical challenge bugle with grunts. Angry but not too angry. Your typical warning to satellites to stay away.

Where's that at?! I'm not fine tuned enough for it ... wish I had known about it tho!

I want to play! This is my favorite type of calls I can use in the woods. Any day you get a chance to bugle with grunts or challenge you're bound to have a memorable day ahead of you!! This call is the things that elk hunting dreams are made of!!

I'll try to get something posted up later today

It's just a small forum based contest for HuntWA.com. Should be fun. Corey, Paul and a local call builder and elk killer named Phelps are the judges.

Good start there Shorthair. All you need is a little voice infliction. Try making growling voice sounds as you blow on the reed.

Solid bugle w/grunts bonkellekter. Only thing that I would recommended is that you work on louder "sucking in air" between your grunts. It's apparent you're doing this, but it's a bit hard to hear. I'm being picky.. Very, very good bugle w/chuckles IMO. RJ

You are really getting it now. That bugle sounded mean. I can clearly hear you sucking air on those grunts too. Way to go!

That's my favorite clip of you bugling Jeremy. If you had that in your HuntWA routine you would be top dog. :)

I think I need to start recording in my truck.

Hey Rory,
Finally made it over... Some good info in these forums. Figured posting elk sounds would be good way to make an introduction! Hope I didn't freak out the new neighbors when I recorded it.. Seems light on the "inhale" to me. Look forward to any feedback - the mo' critical the mo' betta!

Good to see you over here Chris! I agree with you, not enough inhale in between grunts.. Check out post by MattStanton on shorthair15's thread. Really is one of the very best "how to grunt" clips I've personally ever heard.. I think you'll like it.. Looking forward to hearing more of your sounds.. RJ
