Custom Topo Maps for GMU's

Have any of you ever bought a topo map of your entire hunting district? If so how detailed was it? I found that mytopo.com sells them but the most detailed you can get is 1:100,000. Also, you couldn't blow it up any more than a 2x3 map. Not sure if this is enough detail. I've only ever looked at the standard 1:124,000. If nothing else we can use the map to narrow down where we want to go then use a more detailed map or website to get down to the nitty gritty. I know you can make them bigger and more detailed but then you're losing the whole district. My goal is to have the whole district laid out in front while we scout.

Josh, MyTopo is the best I've seen. When the Sportsman's Warehouse was up on Reserve Street they had a machine there that did it for you on the spot. Walk in, zoom in to wherever you wanted and hit the print button. Waterproof too. Maybe the new store, Wholesale Sporting Goods (or whatever it's called) still has that machine on the floor. If so maybe you could ask someone if you can reload the paper and make a two sided map to fit what you want at the level of detail you need.

In order to print an entire GMU in 1:24,000 scale, I doubt you would be able to find a sheet of paper big enough to print it on. However, I have seen GMU maps before. Sorry I can't remember where. But try to Google it and see what comes up.

I would recommend getting the GMU map and then pick out the areas you think you would like to hunt and have Mytopo print it out for you. You can customize them just about any way you want.

Thanks guys. Think I'll go with the 1:100k to get a good overview then once we narrow it down I'll get a 1:124k to hone in on em like a drone.

I just got a gmu map from my topo and I love it. I have one for CO 55 and one for 54 but the 55 is larger at 36x48". Both give a good enough idea ofthe area or new area plus road access. Add google maps to compliment your research and in no time you will be able to narrow your search down to your 7.5' usgs maps. Hope that helps. Also if you were to just happen to need one for CO 54 give me a pm.

I was also pleased with how much the maps went passed the boundary lines of the actual gmu ordered which I assume would change with unit size.

Cabelas and Bass Pro in CO have the maps for GMU's in the stores. IMHO, the print quality is pretty poor. I bought one from Mytopo several years ago and the quality was much better. I now do my pre - scouting online and then zero in on an area before buying a map. The ones in the stores are around $40, which I think is high, especially for the quality.

What I've done is this...

- download the GMU boundaries via FWP
- With Caltopo.com or Topofusion (Caltopo is 13x19 maximum size, Topofusion is limited to the memory of your computer), I then overlay those boundaries onto my desired map layer (usually some sort of shaded relief topo)
- Then with either program, you can create a custom map of your desired dimensions in a PDF. If it's really big, I'll typically take it in to office depot or staples and have them print it out.

I've done some really big ones (48"x60") at office depot. But I typically will just do a double sided 11x17 and carry multiple maps. If my memory is correct (it's been a while since I made a paper map), 1:40k seemed to provide plenty of detail. Much more than that, then you basically have an overview map.
