shorthair, go to elknuts videos and watch all of the calling techniques he uses. He covers a lot of elk sounds and when to use them. ;)

A challenge bugle/scream is probably one of the effective sound you could use on a bull, in particular a herd bull. It is also one of the easiest to make with your diaphragm/grunt tube and there are lots of different variations of the challenge bugle. It is just like human yelling, we let it out fast and load, sometimes out of excitement, aggression, and/or as a threat. The pitch can vary but the tone/intensity is all about in your face.

From a sound stand point, the challenge bugle can be very similar to a bull (satellite or herd bull) desperately seeking/calling cow(s) bugle or a herd bull gathering his cows to move out. As a hunter, you need to recognize this sound and what it means when you hear it so you can respond accordingly.

Shorthair15, yes there are many sounds a Bull will use for specific intentions! As mongopino mentions there are variations to these sounds too! Matureness or age, urgent/demanding or just testing an area in search of can dictate sound intensity used! The key here is to understand these sounds when heard, a hunter does not need to know how to make them all unless he just feels the need! (grin) In time you may add a few here & there but don't become overly concerned with them early on!

I will put a Video Clip together this weekend on the various sounds Bulls make & their identification! No time to explain the actual encounter that each would be applied too but they will give you a very good idea what to listen for or even use yourself at the right time! The DVDs & PlayBook will do that part!

I will share a Challenge,Location, Advertising, Roundup,Calling Cows from another bull or from a hunter using cow sounds. These are the most common ones used & hopefully you will be able to see & hear the differences between them! (grin) Hope this will help you out!!
