New Mex. 51?

Postby dtrkyman » 08 25, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I am hunting 51 solo the 16-22nd hunt, anyone else be in the area or have hunted there before. I am living in Santa Fe so I have made several trips to the area and so far have eliminated several areas :?: Will get a little more serious with my scouting now that is getting close, cattle seem to have trampled over a lot of the elk sign near water and the sign I have found is pretty random.

Regards,

Dan

haven't hunted it but a friend has hunted deer there 1 time. he was camped at the bottom of a mountain (looked more like a giant hill) when opening morning opened up Sept 1ST. when he got up that morning for giggles he ripped a bugle outside his tent. a minute later he was face to face with a big bull. since he already had a CO OTC elk tag he packed up camp and went and killed a nice 6x6 bull that afternoon on a waterhole in CO. wish I could give you more info but there are some nice bulls in the unit.

cool story, I think the unit is great just looking to see if I can find anyone else who will be there at that time and maybe share camp or whatever.

i wish. :(

unit 51 was my second choice. no let me rephrase that. unit 51 was my second, "unsuccessful"..you'd think i was trying to hunt a unicorn or something. that tag was supposed to be easier to draw!!

my good friend drew it twice. he knocked down great bulls, (and one cow). he is 100% with his dad being that 50%. great unit. he has always promised to put an "X" on my map if i ever drew. so far his secret is safe.

good luck buddy!! i love it up there.

Keep your eyes out for a older red toyota 4 runner that was reported stealing out of peoples camps. Read a post on MM

Scumbags, was a little worried about that all week but had no issue, saw a bunch of traffic around but do not recall a red 4 runner.
