Not too shabby gentlemen. All are location or advertising bugles that'll "get er done". Fez went the extra lap and threw in some chuckles for good measure :) We'll get the bugle w/chuckles and bugles w/grunts going soon. Here's my offering.. OK, let's here some more of your location bugles. RJ

Good stuff guys, a couple of you can really belt it, sweet! !! Fez, no need for any chuckling at all on location sounds, you sounded just fine though!

irem, you need to add a full second to your Location bugle, it was a tad short, but very good job! Just constructive advice is all, I know we all want to be as good as we can!!! (grin) Go ahead & give it another shot!

Okay, here is an attempt at a location bugle. I have always just used a cow call in the field, and have never really bugled much, and this year will be a first for me. I am new at this. So any advice will be great.

For anybody else posting up (or working on their various elk sounds), check out Slim9300 and wapitibowman's locater bugle.. You're after an elongated "high note".. They both hit it. This what carries and is heard for great distances in the elk woods and serves the desired purpose of this elk sound in "most" situations. One, two, or three note bugles are fine but hitting and holding that high octave note carries and bangs off the sidehills of the basin or canyon .... your target area. You want everything within and up to a mile (terrain and wind allowing) to hear you and perhaps, answer back, providing you with a location of that guy you're gonna go after.. RJ

Jahnke76, very good. Now hold your end note high & for another 1/2 to 1 second longer.

Shorthair, awesome, especially for only 4 days of using a mouth reed! You too need to hold your high end note for another second longer!

Both of you give it another shot so we can hear your adjustment!

shorthair, much better! Your Location Bugle will work in the elkwoods, never stop practicing so you stay sharp come elk season! (grin) Location Bugles will last 3-4 seconds generally, feel free to time yourself now & then to get the feel for the length, this should help out!

I was having trouble with my location bugle this week and didn't like the one I posted on here. I inspected my diaphragm I was using closely and found a tear in it. Lesson learned. Is this one any better?

Here is my location bugle. I talked with joel turner who is one hell of a caller and he puts it like this. when you hit that note that makes your ears ring, hold that for a few seconds and then end it. Let me tell you it works like a charm.

Sounds really good. That high note sounds perfect. Have you ever tried eliminating the growl in the beginning? I would think it would sound more realistic if you left out the growl. Honestly though, very impressive. What reed do you use?

I'm kind of the same way. I like the Closer and the Screaming Tormentor but the Raging Bull is my go to reed for all calling. The odd thing is that I feel my cow sounds are better with the Raging bull as compared to the Mellow Yellow. Do you switch reeds in the field or do you just stick with a single reed on a setup?

when i am trying to locate a bull or "prospecting" as I call it, I can pick and choose my calls. If the heat is on and things are happening fast, I can use any of the calls to get it done but when I have time to analize the situation and switch my calls to fit the situation, I will.

Boy, I'll tell you... my reed just doesn't sound the same after not calling for a few weeks on it. Perhaps I have it positioned differently or something, but I was struggling to get the sounds out of it tonight.

Yeah, imagine that... a forum loaded with dedicated elk hunters who can call! This is going to be a FUN place to check in come September!!!! No doubt about it, I learn more from this forum than all of my others combined!

You guys want a target? Listen to Slim9300's locater bugle. His is on point. I'm actually working on my locater bugle to more resemble his sounds.. Start with just air without even touching your tongue to the reed... hit the first note briefly and then quickly transition through a mid note to the high and hold the high note.. It's really tough to do but if you've heard your fair share of locater bugles in the elk woods, this is what they sound like. Slim and I took my boat out in PS in WA this weekend to see if the fall run kings were in yet. We ended up practicing our elk sounds on the water more than fishing :) He outfished me if you count flounder :). I did catch the only salmon. Again, if you want a target/standard for a locater.... Work on trying to copy Slim's. RJ

I spent a bunch of time trying different reeds this weekend and I've finally found which work best for me. I was always just calling with whatever reed was closest, but there is a remarkable difference for me between reeds. I'll try to get some more sounds up later. If any other newbies haven't done this, definitely try a bunch of different reeds to see which is best for you. Not new advice, but I'm slow on the uptake!

I was always just calling with whatever reed was closest, but there is a remarkable difference for me between reeds. I'll try to get some more sounds up later. If any other newbies haven't done this, definitely try a bunch of different reeds to see which is best for you. Not new advice, but I'm slow on the uptake!
