Why Were You Busted?

Finding elk and killing elk are two entirely different things. Anyone who has hunted the mangy critters has learned that they can come out on top in spite of our best plans and tactics. I suppose I have messed up multiple times in every imaginable way, and I have paid the price. The wind shifted, a calf saw me, or I moved at just the wrong moment are common. What are some things you have experienced that sent you back to camp frustrated and wondering if there is any such thing as good luck?

Wind shifting has been my biggest problem.

swirling winds is easily the most common thing.....
But it only took me once to learn I cant draw when the bull is coming in to me and I can see his face.....duh

Moved to soon waking up from a nap! Was trying to get into position for an approaching bull and raised my a__ to get my call out of my pocket and he caught the movement. And, before Indian Summer reminds me, it wouldn't have mattered as I didn't have an arrow knocked anyway. Two lessons learned many years before and should not have been repeated!

Busted by the lead cow on more than 1 occasion. A frustrating repeat mistake made from being over ambitious I think.

Too much coffee

I've been caught moving several times. But most of the time wind sent me back to camp empty handed.

If you were busted due to drinking too much coffee, it was your own fault cnelk. You did not follow my advise on tree stand height. By having your stand too close to the ground, your urine did not adequately dissipate before descending through the tree canopy. Again it's your issue.

Too much coffee

I do drink plenty of coffee, but I usually I feel compelled to move that one last time to be in the perfect spot and each year I am say I am going work on it and I do….find elk, set up, call (rake, stomp) or whatever the situation calls for, contact initiated, oh wait just a minute that spot over there would be the PERFECT spot, move to PERFECT spot, get BUSTED……….no problem find elk, set up …….See some would say I am working on my issue because I have taken the first step in admitting I have the problem…or something like that rrr….but this year will be different…

Being in a blind calling setup, get anxious to move on, loose focus & move & there stands the bull. (grin) Yep, I'm guilty of this one on a yearly basis, you'd think at 58 I'd have more patience! (grin)

Working one bull, and getting busted by another coming in from behind or off to the side (Satellites are quite sneaky).

Got to have your wits about ya!

Of the few close encounters Ive had.
Once the bulls got tired of the camera flash, and finally moved off
Otherwise animals moving to the downwind side or the wind changing.
As far as seeing me. Ive had a bunch of elk look at me then continue on, however Ive been sitting on my rear on the ground, with ground or cover behind me
