Sixteen years in a row no elk tag in NM for me, I was hoping I could change my handle this year.

I did get drawn for Deer and Barbary Sheep.

You must not be choosing a reasonable third choice unit but I guess that's your own decision.

I have landowner permits for both deer and elk, so dont even play the NM draw anymore...hunt unit is only two hours away, fifth wheels already on the ranch...guess I'm lucky

I missed out on all elk but drew mule deer in unit 17, so that is great. My rookie buddy drew 16D 2nd cow and the same deer hunt as me, somehow. I can't wait to help him score his first elk.

Well Slim I have always tried to hunt units I know. Unit 36 has been my favorite for some time. This year I put in for 16b as my 3rd choice since it had around a 25% success rate which is what 36 used to be when I i used to get drawn. I guess now that I have more time to scout I could try a unit with less elk, but after so many years I keep figuring I'm due.

Now I have to decide whether I want to hunt CO again after the new anti-gun laws and increase in landowner tags.

Congratulations lots of us will look foward to reading about your unit 17 deer hunt. I have been puting in for it as my first and second choice for the last couple of years but NR odds are kind of tuff.

Typo for the deer- Should have been Sept. 24-30.

I will definetly honk when passing Socorro. Looks like you don't have to travel far for your deer hunt.

It will be my first time in 52 so I look foward to the new terrain. As for Unit 13 I have a score to settle with a nice herd bull. I hunted last year Sept. 11-18 and he gave me the slip! Hopefully he is still there.....
