General tag for WY. what do u know about area 81,83?

Postby rosco » 04 11, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I drew a general license for WY for this fall. I was wondering if anyone has hunted 81 or 83 before. Wondering what the terrain is like and how the elk population is. Any info would be great! Thanks

Since you haven't gotten any replies I'll take a stab at it. First though: Welcome to our humble little home here at ElkNut Forums!

I don't have experience in those specific units but I can tell you you are in pretty good country. You've obviously done some homework because those units are surrounded by wilderness that non residents can't hunt... but your ok there. One thing about that region in general is that lots of guys have and use horses to hunt. Make an effort to not only get away from roads a bit but also away from horse trails. Not all trails are on the map either. Western Wyo has horse trails all over the place.

Anytime you get north of Jackson you have to be aware of grizzlies. No need to be in contsant fear by any means but you will have to camp smart meaning don't cook in the tent you sleep in and hang your food at night and when you're not in camp. Of course if you leave dead game try to leave it in an area where you can see it before you approach and don't sneak up quietly to your hanging meat.

The elk are there and they can be talkative so you can have some sense of confidence heading to that neck of the woods. If you want to guage quantity and quality find the outfitters in the area you plan to hunt and check out the pics on their websites. A 300 inch bull is a very realistic expectation anywhere on the west side.

The bull in my pic to the right is from a western Wyoming general license unit. Good luck... I won't be far from you come fall.

thanks for the info. me and my hunting partner are not for sure yet if that's where we are going to hunt for sure yet but it sounds like a pretty good area.
