Efective sounds in october

Can someone with experience tell me about the use of calls in the mid to late october rifle sesons in Colorado? Get to hunt with a very good friend this year and he can only come during 2nd rifle.

I have never called elk then, but I have been out working and rifle hunting deer and heard them. I would like to try some night calling to locate elk. A side benefit should be that you will not be calling in a hunter with a 30-06 who is looking for you. I would try regular cold calling set ups to locate elk, but don't forget about that 30-06 the other hunter has.

Treat calling the same as you would in Sept. You are trying to locate elk not call them to you in most situations, even in Oct. We've take a few elk in Oct. with a rifle, when calling is needed you will not be doing anything special for the time period. The Bugle is our number 1 tool for the job. Definitely be cautious in your calling if other hunters are within earshot, do your best to get away from all hunting pressure if calling is what you want to do. Glassing is of the utmost importance at this time as well. Consider escape routes where pressure from other hunters will move the elk towards.

Locator bugle will often make a bull sound off but not likely to call him in during the rifle seasons. But it may help you find out where they are. Not a sure thing!

Nervous bark will stop them on a dime every time for a shot opertunity. I feel this this is the most effective call any elk hunter should learn.

I have called cows in many times during the later October rifle seasons.
Bulls, not so much.
Using soft, cow/calf sounds work best for me.
Especially in small openings with timber near by.

They tend to be very quiet, as they slip in to check you out.

Agree 100% with swede and elknut! Be cautious when calling in the high power hunts. If I was to call in this time of the hunt, especially in high pressure hunted areas would be to stop them with a nervous grunt to get the shot off.

I've called-in several mature bulls for my ex-wife during October second rifle season in N. CO with cow-call combinations. Once when she had only a cow tag I called a great 6x to within 7 feet of her. Every one came in silently.

Lost cow calls are DEADLY!! I learned that from one of elknuts CD's. We went 5 for 5 this year with the smoke pole. 3 of those 5 died as a result of using the lost cow call. I called my cow in with a lost cow call. I did a blind calling set up. On the first set of calling I heard a stampede coming. 15 yes away a cow burst out of the brush. It happened that fast. I called my Dad's spike in that I spotted from the other side of the drainage. He squealed/bugled once and came in on a string. My brothers cow had been spooked up by me and was running across a hillside. He started calling using the lost cow call and she ran over to him. This was the second week of October. The 6th through the 9th. We also got a few bulls fired up and would answer us but we didn't have bull tags so we left them alone. But we did locate a few using the lost cow call.
