the following quote was posted on another forum in response to a thread and i hope he doesn't mind me using it but i thought it was worthy of a conversation in and of itself. i have a few thoughts but wondered what you all think.

"I have noticed more bugling soon after bulls shed/rub their velvet. Maybe for a few days. Then quiet for awhile until the rut gets closer.

I would say this is the time that the bulls begin to sense the upcoming rut and begin to vocalize, hence getting to know one another by bugle recognition.

I am not sure why elk bugle in August, but your observation is correct. As stated earlier bulls can bugle at any time. I have heard them, at different times from early Spring through well into the fall. The pick up of bugling in kate August cooresponds with the time the bulls become ready to breed and the early estrus period.

I have heard em cranked good also in July.
but my bowhunts are time limted in Sept so I really have no experience regarding the observation.

We've killed some of our bigger bulls the first week of the season in August. We've always heard bulls bugling when we've hunted up high, and become very aggressive when you scream at them.
Also, when bulls move into the rutting areas they bugle a lot, I guess trying to see whos around. I dunno, but last November when I shot my bull, he had twenty some cows and calves and started bugling on his own...foolish foolish foolish...
