Not sure why my original thought didn't post, but here's the gist: Bowhunting for elk isn't quite a "way of life" for me because I love fishing and plains muley hunting too. But I craft a good portion of my life around it - career, lifestyle, fitness, diet, shooting, scouting, studying maps and Google Earth, reading, talking with other elk bowhunters.

No matter my definition, the other people in my life, hunters and non, business, family and personal, seem to define ME by by elk bowhunting. So I guess from the outside looking in, it is what I am.

WW could not have said it any better. It seems that I have a 12 month obsession with elk.

Elk hunting: A test of all of life's lessons such as patience and perisistence, to name a few, and the whole concept of achieving a long term goal where mental and physical meet head on!

0r.. an activity which never fails to separate the men & women from the boys and girls. Funny to see men cry like little girls... and women rival men. Yeah buddy, start elk hunting and you will learn some things about yourself (& your partners) that you never knew because for the first time ever you will be truly pushed to your limits. (unless you've been to boot camp) 0r you won't in which case you didnt really hunt elk.

Im not going to frost the cake...

As much as I like elk hunting, and all that goes with it, IT IS A LOT OF WORK!

Thats why I take it pretty seriously. It is such a brief moment of our time each passing year.
Everything that goes along with it is a valuable lesson in life.

From practice shooting a bow or gun, preparing gear, going over maps, camp, being bone-ass tired each morning, and many more items.
But I wouldnt trade it for anything

Enjoy this time of the keyboard guys... this is the frosting...

Elk hunting for me is not about the elk at all, I've hunted this creature for 5 year and drew a blank every year. But I would not trade any of those hunts for anything. I learned something every year and for 4 of those hunts my dad came out and hunted with me like when did years ago when I was a kid. Elk hunting unlike many other forms of hunting is not about the hunt but more about the experience. We spend a week and a half living out of a tent in gods country in a location that every night the stars are so bright you feel like you can reach out and touch them, it's like living in heaven. For me it is about being on the mountain and spend time doing what i love to do. :D

My definition would be: Plan and dream for eleven and one half months. Go out to Colorado and hunt elk for two to three weeks. Come back east and be happy and thankful if successful and if not successful start evaluating the hunt to see what I can do different next year. Repeat above steps annually. Mike
