San Juan Area Archery Hunt

When my friends and I were planning our first trip we were dead set on hunting Wyoming. Over time we have changed to Colorado and more specifically San Juan region. I interested in an archery hunt, out of GMU's 77, 78, and 751 which ones would be best for archery? Thanks for any and all info.

Those are all good units if ya pick the right spot. The Primos videos have everybody and their brother heading to the San Juans. Why did ya'll change your minds about Wyo? Wyoming has much less pressure. That is a huge understatement. There is definitely good spots in all three of those units, but if I were going blind on my first elk hunt I'd definitely reconsider Wyo. I hunted elk in Wyo for the first time this year and was very pleasantly surprised. We went 4 for 4 and saw elk by the dozens every day. I would continue to web-scout both states and go with the spot you get the best intel on before going. Good luck! (Wyo bull from last season)

Otcwill is 100% correct, expect to see hunter even if you pack in 10 miles. There are pockets but you have to find them first, tons of people in those units but it is awesome country.

in GMU 77 &78, you pack in 10 miles and youre in GMU 76. I live here, know the boundaries, and most guys dont understand that in most places, 5 miles in from trailheads to the north puts you in GMU 76. Thats why I cant figure out how guys boost they were 8 miles in on the Nuche Wilderness...76 my friends. And to the south, you cant go 10 miles in before youre in another GMU. To the west...you go 5 miles in, and guys from the Vallecito area Beaver Meadows area drive within 2 miles from where youre at and hunt from the end of the road.
We do get a lot of hunters in this area, A LOT!!! Plus we are getting a lot of out of state and out of town outfitters in this area now. Its sad to see and hear trucks cruising the roads in the mornings bugling into the canyons.

Wow maybe we should rethink Wyo. Basically we have a much better starting point in Co but 2 of the 3 of us would rather hunt Wyo. We are going in Sep. 2014 and plan on buying a point this year. Can someone please tell me a couple units that would be good for archery during the rut that only require 1 pref. point. That way I could start to move forward with my planning. Thanks for any and all info.

Truth be known, thats why i protect the property we have, and why I stop all from corner crossing. HUnting is getting very crowded around here. Used to be, guys complained about the black powder hunters, now its about the high numbers of bowhunters.
I had a back pack and small six point rack stolen out of the back of my truck two seasons ago, while we were coming up the train on 4 wheelers with the rest of the bull just a few hundred yards below the truck.
We are having a high number of vehicles being broken into every year now while they are parked at the trailheads. Taking tires, tool boxes, inside door panels...I dont know if you guys up north are having this problem, but im fearful for my truck every time I leave it...

Lordy, that sucks. If you have an extra trail camera, let it watch over your vehicle while you're out. Won't necessarily prevent anything from happening but at least you'll get them on camera.
