Wyoming NR Points

One suggested that I start to apply for Wyoming PPs. I will be doing my first elk hunt in September 2014 and wanted to enter for some points. After 2014 I want to start going every other year, with that being said I need more information on PPs and the zones in Wyoming. I know nothing and need to start from square one. I will using my bow on the trip if that helps any. Any advice would be appreciated.

Question 1: How many points will I be able to get by September 2014, and when is the deadline to apply?

Question 2: Is there a map that tells me the areas and how many points are needed to draw a tag.

The deadline to apply for a WY license is 1/31. The application period to buy points only is from July through September. You do N0T need to pick a unit to buy a point and any points you accumulate are good in any hunting unit. That means you can buy a point this year and would have 1 for the January 2014 application. 1 point will get you the General elk license in the random drawing.

For draw odds on specific units go to the top right of this page and click on "Draw 0dds" then click on Wyoming, then on "elk preference points". You will see that they offer a both regular non-res license in the random draw, and a Special license. Special means more money for better odds... but read the odds on each unit because that's not always the case. You may have questions on those files so feel free to ask. 0n the right side of that page you can also click on "elk hunt area map" to see where they are.

0ne more thing worth mentioning: In Wyoming your points are based only on your first unit choice. If you don't draw your 1st choice you will gain a point.... even if you draw your second choice.

How do I find out what zones only need one point to draw a tag? Or how exactly does Wyoming work? Any info would be awesome, I looked at their website but it's hardly English.

LOL. It is very confusing I agree. I don't know if zones are part of the elk units. As a resident there are still things on the nonresident side I don't understand. If I'm correct you can only apply for a "zone" for deer. BUT I MAY BE WRONG. Points for trophy units are pretty self explanatory. The way I understand putting in for the "general tag" for elk is that you can draw 2 out of every 3 years. It is 50% draw odds without any points and 100% with points. Odds are in your favor that you should average the tag 2 out of every 3 years. Heck you could get lucky and draw every single year with your 50% chance.....or get unlucky and only draw every other year. Hope I helped a little.

Spend some time looking at units at www.diyhuntingmaps.com. I like this sight for quick intel on a unit like elevation range,percent public,easy access,
If its combined with other units, wilderness in the unit along with some harvest and draw data. It even gives you seasons and dates. Units like 97 I could see there is a type 1 tag that starts around September the 20. If I wanted to hunt that unit with a bow it's good to know the rifles will start on the 20th. Hunters trail head is better for draw odds data it justs cost $25.

Non-Res deer licenses can be bought by Region. If you get a Region tag you can hunt every Unit in that Region that does N0T require a Limited Quota license.

Elk licenses are similar but instead of Regional licenses... there's a General Elk license. It's valid statewide in any Unit that doesn't require a unit specific Limited Quota License.

If you go to the WY F&G website put your cursor on HUNTING at the top, then on the left under PLAN Y0UR HUNT click on ELK or DEER. 0n the next screen click on the SEAS0NS tab. From there click TENTATIVE SEAS0N INF0 and it will list every Unit, and for deer the Regions, and tell you whether they are huntable on General (elk) Regional(deer) or Limited Quota licenses. The season dates for each season/weapon are also listed there. You may want to save that file for future reference.

So if we were to go every other year and buy a point the year we don't go we would draw 100% of the time? Thanks for the info guys I'm just a Wisconsin boy waaaay out of his element.
